The gigs are up by @colmbourke
16 months ago, at 30 years of age, 3 days after winning my first national title, I completely tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in my jumping leg. My first thought that night was, "That's the last time I'll ever jump." But as the days passed and messages of support came in, I thought to myself: "There's no way I'm going out like that." I committed to this long and unpredictable rehab process, hoping and believing I could make a full return one day. Yesterday that happened! Up until then, I was so focused on the work required to get back that I completely forgot what it would actually feel like to stand out there again. There were so many emotions, but all I can say is it felt absolutely amazing - and it's something I'm very proud of. To all the physios, coaches, and medical staff, particularly at the @upmcsportssurgeryclinic, thank you so much for helping me get back to doing what I love. And of course, a big thanks also goes to my close friends and family who have supported me through the ups and downs over the past year and a half, I love ye. Massive shout-out to @markavanagh_photography for the 📸 by @colmbourke

Not without its challenges, but all in all, not a bad year by @colmbourke
Today marks a big milestone in the ole ACL recovery journey. With less than 10% asymmetry between legs, I’ve been given the thumbs up to return to full training. Mad. I really never thought I’d be back here at this stage. My S&C coach @tommyjmooney - to whom I credit much of the progress - told me, “This is all just an extended pre-season.” To be honest, I didn’t believe him at the time (sorry, Tommy). Here we are though. As cliché as it is, the small wins are important to take in - they keep you going. Athletics has taught me that. I’m glad I’m going through this now instead of 10 years ago, because returning to performance is going to be even more challenging. Thanks Tommy, @thilina_physio , Surgeon Dan Withers, and all the other kind and smart folks who helped me get back to this point. I'm ready to give this one last lash! 📸: @bc_trackvision by @colmbourke
August doing it's magic again Not included: wrong airports, lost phones, hacked accounts, and ~100 wrong turns. by @colmbourke
The elation from nationals was short lived after I landed awkwardly during my last indoor competition of the season - resulting in a rupture of my ACL. Having all the hard earned momentum derailed so suddenly, along with the uncertainty that comes with an injury of this severity is pretty devastating. If the past year has taught me anything though it's, "You're never too high to fall, but you're never too low to rise" - Altis. 🤟 by @colmbourke

After 16 years and 20 attempts, I can finally call myself a national champion!! From silver medals to last-minute injuries, COVID travel restrictions, and countless days of underperforming, it feels surreal to finally check off a goal that’s been at the top of my list for so long. What makes it particularly sweet for me isn’t just the result - it’s how it happened. The past few years have been a big struggle, I've tried very hard to figure out what I needed to do to get back on form. A big turning point was during my off season last August. I was lucky enough to speak with @danpfaff on the podcast where he spoke extensively about the importance of debriefing. Going away from our conversation I got more precise with my training priorities and debriefing process, and it didn't take long for me to start seeing the benefits. This year, i've leaned into hobbies outside of athletics (albeit sensibly). The end result was I came into this indoor season with not just greater skill and confidence in my preparation, but also less worried about results. The icing the cake was getting my old coach from ULM @glennsmith996 back on board last month to keep me accountable and moving in the right direction, particularly when the pressure began to rise. Sharing this achievement with him on my side makes it feel like it was supposed to happen this way.  My family has been the best support since day one! I'm so glad I got to share that moment with Dad, John, Laura, and some of my close friends. Even when sport has been tough over the years, all was still well because of ye. Cheers to everyone for all the lovely messages over the past few days 🤟 📸 @markavanagh_photography and @bc_trackvision by @colmbourke
Starting off the season with my furthest ever opener and performance indoors since 2016 -- only 2cm shy of my 21 year old self. Back then, all I worried about was jumping into a sandpit and not failing college. I'm wearing a few more hats these days so to still be pushing my own boundaries at age 30 feels very sweet. It's been a long time since I had a performance that matched the shape I was in. Over the past four months, I've gone back to basics, telling myself: if I don't get faster or stronger but become that bit more technically proficient on the runway, the results will come. Here’s to a plan coming together and to everyone who helped me get back here! 📸 @markavanagh_photography by @colmbourke
