On July 18, 2025, Gillian Murphy, who is currently American Ballet Theatre’s longest-standing dancer, will end her 29-year career dancing in Swan Lake. A principal dancer at ABT since 2002, Gillian’s early training was at the Columbia Conservatory of Dance under William Starrett and Mariclare Miranda. Gillian danced with South Carolina Ballet as Clara in Nutcracker, Victoria in Dracula: Ballet with a Bite, and Starrett created Thursday’s Child in Beauty & the Beast for her. Miss Murphy left the Columbia Conservatory of Dance to train at the North Carolina School of the Arts before joining ABT in 1996.

South Carolina Ballet CEO & Artistic Director, William Starrett, will travel to New York for Gillian’s farewell performance. As an alumnus of American Ballet Theatre himself, Starrett expressed deep pride in returning to ABT not only as a former dancer but also as the artistic mentor of a dancer whose career has helped define a generation of American ballet. Join William Starrett, South Carolina Ballet, and all of Gillian Murphy’s fans in wishing her all the best. Brava, Gillian!

If you are considering dance education for your child, Columbia Conservatory of Dance is now enrolling for the new semester. Call 803-252-0555.
