You've locked the cabinet. But do you know who was standing in front of the rack at 2am? A lock decides who can reach your kit. A camera tells you who tried. For physical security, you want both, especially for the room your whole business runs from. It's the quiet gap in a lot of small setups. The comms room, the stockroom, the back office where the server lives are exactly the places worth watching, and usually the ones nobody is. You don't need a 32-camera control room to fix it: a couple of PoE IP cameras on the entry points and the kit, an NVR to record and store, and enough resolution to identify a face rather than just spot movement. One cable each, straight back to the switch. The kids go back to school, the office fills up, and every device that logged off tries to reconnect at 9am on the same morning. The October half term is the window everyone means to use for the network refresh, but time gets away from you, and now the load is back with more devices, heavier Wi-Fi demand, cabling that is a year older, and switches sitting at capacity. Whether it’s a school full of returning students or an office back from the lull, a network that limped through last year will not cope better with more piled on top. It’s far better to find the weak spots now than in week one. It's nearly Halloween, so let's talk about the genuinely frightening things lurking in the average small-business comms room. The door propped open with a fire extinguisher. The nest of unlabelled cables nobody's brave enough to touch. The UPS with a battery that quietly died in 2022 and hasn't been tested since. The single switch holding up the entire office, with nothing behind it if it fails. None of it looks particularly scary on any given day, but it certainly causes a fright when one of them finally goes. The good news is that nothing in there is actually supernatural. It's all fixable, and most of it before it ever becomes a callout: label the runs, lock the door, test the battery, and know what you'd do if the switch died. Sort it now, while it's still just a bit untidy rather than a proper fright. #Halloween #ITInfrastructure #ServerRoom #Networking by @commsexpress

Today is International Internet Day. On this day in 1969, the internet sent its very first message. It was meant to say "LOGIN", but it could only manage "LO" before the system crashed. Humble beginnings for something we now can't run a business without. Fast forward to today, and the expectation has flipped completely. We don't just want the network to work; we want fast, reliable Wi-Fi everywhere at once, on dozens of devices that all expect to connect without a second thought. Ubiquiti UniFi delivers that reliably. Its latest kit runs on Wi-Fi 7, the newest wireless standard, built for exactly this: more devices, more speed, and steadier connections across a whole site, all managed from one place. The internet has come a long way, and this is how your Wi-Fi keeps pace today. A Cat6 cable should perform like a Cat6 cable, whichever brand is on the box. The category is your shorthand for performance you can count on: Cat5e for everyday gigabit, Cat6 as the solid middle ground, and Cat6A when you want proper 10-gigabit headroom for the years ahead. But a standard only counts if the kit actually meets it, and cheaper cable doesn't always. Fluke's testing equipment can confirm when your cables properly perform to their spec, as opposed to simply claiming to. It's the same standards-first thinking we hold ourselves to, which is why Comms Express is ISO 9001 certified. Not every threat to your data walks in through the door. Some of it comes through the mains. A lot of Cyber Security Awareness Month is about keeping people out. But the thing that actually takes a small business offline is more often a power cut, a brownout, or a surge: the kind that drops a NAS mid-write, forces a hard shutdown, and leaves you hoping nothing got corrupted on the way down. Staying up is part of staying secure. That's the job a UPS does. It bridges the short outages and dips that make up most power events, keeps the essentials running, and gives everything time to shut down cleanly rather than dropping dead. Even a modest line-interactive unit on the switch, router, and NAS covers the kit you can least afford to lose. Guest Wi-Fi, the CCTV cameras, the smart TV in the meeting room, and the server with your accounts on it: on plenty of small networks, they're all sharing one flat network and chatting away to each other. The trouble is there are no internal walls. So when one device gets compromised, say a visitor's laptop or some cheap smart gadget nobody's patched in years, it can reach everything else on the network. A managed switch is what puts the walls back in, splitting the network into VLANs, keeping guests, cameras, and core business traffic in their own lanes so a problem in one can't spread to the rest. There’s no rebuild needed either; swapping an unmanaged switch for a managed one is where it starts.
