With all the bad in the world, a moment of Zen

Typo alert!

thanks to everyone who has been trying out Unsnared Drum Lab in the last few months. Here’s a musical typo: p 75 has the wrong exercise as exercise 2. I like the 2nd exercise I mistakenly excluded, so here it is! Yikes, time to practice!

This page, “Bounce Juxtaposition,” is part of the chapter on Rolls and Bounces.

The book is available at my website and at @steveweissmusic by @comp.y.tello

My penguins and I spent a dense few days with the amazing members of @michiganstateperc . What an honor to share the stage with Prof Dease!

We really excited to have @queypercussionduo and @comp.y.tello out to Lincoln this semester as our Fall 2026 Guest Artists 🥁

They will be teaching lessons to studio members, giving masterclasses in studio class, and a guest recital while on campus.

We had such an awesome time hosting Dr. Mike Compitello (@comp.y.tello) yesterday! He presented on his new book, “Unsnared Drum Lab,” and filled the room with wisdom (and fantastic jokes).

Thanks for spending time with us! 🥁

Hot on the heels of the release of Unsnared Drum Lab, I’m looking forward to sharing ideas on creativity in the practice room in-person (!) this fall.

I can’t wait to dig into these ideas and learn from students and faculty at these incredible schools. See you soon!

"I wanted the audience to see the rhythms as well as hear them. There is also a beautiful ambiguity between the click of the switch box and the dry, clicky instrumentation. Like the electronics, the acoustic instruments seem to emerge from the mechanical sounds of the hardware switches, before taking on a life of their own."

New video premiere out now on I CARE IF YOU LISTEN! Visit our website to check out the composition by Gabriel Bolaños, performed by Crossing 32 Street Ensemble.

Another set of exercises from Unsnared Drum Lab. This one, Finger Fusilade, develops the finger strength necessary for smooth rebounds. As opposed to a double stroke, here the fingers must execute a single wrist stroke over a longer period while maintaining rhythmic precision.

The base exercise is fine, but I encourage you to make it more challenging before “putting it back” and testing whether it worked. In the book, I included a more extended étude that ends on a plagal cadence, but the BEST exercise is the one you invent to solve your own problems. I may have had too much fun with the fonts here.

An exercise from the Inverted Double chapter of “Unsnared Drum Lab,” intended to refine the finger motion required for inverted doubles alongside its technical opposite (a wrist-driven throwing stroke).

The most important part is inventing your own version of this exercise or varying it to suit your needs. I even varied it while recording 😮 Remember, “great chefs season as they cook. Great musicians test their phrasing as they practice.”

What an honor and a joy to be able to interview my teacher and mentor Robert van Sice for this compendium of stories about marimba.

I hope it highlights how invigorating it was working with him, how his sonic awareness and ability to bring dizzying, wide-ranging influences into our lessons inspired us to play with grace, precision, and poetry.

Bob shared about how his teachers, collaborators, and students shaped his career. Preparing questions for Bob and working with him editing the prose brought out a lot of the excitement of studying with him. For those who remember Bob dictating eloquent letters to us in studio class and lessons, you’ll know his responses were engaging, deferential, and vibrant.

Getting back in shape, and for me, that means tinkering with my technique. Here: fulcrums.

They all sound different and respond to different stroke types. I like to vary what I do constantly, and avoid repeating the same material for more than a few seconds without changing in response to what you’ve heard, seen, or felt.

I explore many approaches to tinkering in my Unsnared Drum Lab book. Let me know what you think!
