In 2024, I won Armed Forces Advocate of the Year for research into something most people never think about: what having a baby actually looks like inside military life.

My Masters research looked at how isolation, separation, and constant mobility affect families during the perinatal period.

During early COVID, postpartum depression symptoms nearly tripled — driven almost entirely by isolation and the loss of a normal postpartum support system. For most families, that was a once-in-a-generation crisis. For military families, that level of isolation is just Tuesday. Add 7–10 moves into the mix, and something as basic as consistent healthcare becomes a puzzle you have to solve yourself — often while pregnant.

This isn’t a knock on military life. There’s real joy and richness in it too. This is a flag — for more support, so mothers can actually be well in it.

And it’s not only a military story anymore. More and more civilian families are living far from their people, figuring out motherhood without a village too.

This has always been personal for me. I still remember standing in a post office in Germany, six days postpartum, trying to get my one-week-old to open her eyes for a passport photo. I spent my first postpartum period in a transition flat, everything in boxes — no nesting, no nursery, just the unsettled feeling and the tears.

I know what the right support, at the right time, can do for how a mother shows up — for herself, her baby, her family. That’s worth the investment. Every time.

If this is speaking to you — whether you’re navigating pregnancy or postpartum within military life, or just far from your usual support — I’d love to help. Link to book a call with me is in my bio

Midwifery advice, 1905 vs. today 📖🚩

Found this absolute artifact in my book collection — “An Introduction to Midwifery,” Donald M.D., 1905 — and I regret to inform you that “self-care” in 1905 meant a bag of mercury, a Higginson’s syringe, and a strict six-hour negotiation with your own

A forced bowel movement on day three, no negotiating. Vernix scrubbed off with soap by the fireplace like the baby owed it money. And a midwife’s bag that reads more like a chemistry set than a birth kit.

We’ve come a long way, super happy about not experiencing the glass enema, although I have talked a few moms through that first postpartum….. never mind 😅

Swipe through for the full “then vs. now” 👉 and tell me in the comments: which old-school “wisdom” would you also like to never hear again?

And listen — you don’t need to dig through a 1905 textbook, a 2026 textbook, or three hours of Googling “is it normal if—“ at 2am. That’s what I’m here for. Book me, and skip straight to the part where someone actually answers your questions

Pregnancy after a difficult journey is different. And your body knows it.

If you’ve walked through loss, IVF, a birth that left you shaken, or a difficult postpartum you probably already know the feeling — the worry that shows up for no clear reason, the need to check in more than “normal,” the relief of just hearing “you’re okay” one more time.

That’s not you being anxious. That’s your nervous system doing exactly what it’s supposed to do: trying to keep you safe from being hurt again.

I see it. I understand it. And I know what it took to get here — which is exactly why you deserve extra reassurance, not less of it.

You will never have to explain yourself with me, or minimize what you’ve been through. Every pregnancy carries its own history, and I bring sensitivity, experience, and deep respect to every family I work with.

If this is where you are right now, I’d love to talk.

If you’ve been looking for a doula who gets it — I’m one text away. Book now, no expectations, just support.

There are no expectations here. My job is to be with you through it all — the 12am texts, the tears in the kitchen, the days you feel like you got nothing done.

I will be right there. Helping you with the laundry. Reminding you of the 100+ times you stopped your train of thought to respond to your baby’s needs. Just sitting in it all, because you deserve help, and you deserve to be seen.

I still carry guilt from my own postpartum experience. As a military spouse, I was so alone — more anxious and less patient than I’d ever been.

But I forgot something important: I was new too. Not just the baby I was holding. I had never parented before — let alone parented in a foreign country.

“I wasn’t myself for months and nobody noticed.”
I felt that one deeply.

Because sometimes motherhood doesn’t look like falling apart. Sometimes it looks like getting everyone dressed, making the meals, answering the texts, smiling for the pictures, and saying, “I’m good,” when you’re really just trying to make it through the day.

You can love your babies more than anything in the world and still miss the woman you were before them. You can be grateful and overwhelmed. Happy and exhausted. Full of love and still feel a little lost.

And sometimes, what a new mama needs most isn’t advice or another reminder of what she should be doing. She just needs someone to notice her.

To ask, “How are you really doing?”
To sit with her. To help without being asked. To remind her that she’s still in there somewhere.

Because it takes a village to raise a child, but it also takes a village to hold a mother. 🤍

And to every mama who hasn’t felt like herself lately:sometimes you have to create the village you wanted ❤️

There's a reason "how do I get my baby to sleep alone" is one of the most Googled phrases among new parents.
It's hard — especially when you're sleep deprived and still recovering yourself. But needing your baby close doesn't mean you're failing. Babies are wired to want your scent, your sound, your warmth. That's not a flaw in your parenting, that's just biology.
I know you're tired. So here's the reframe: it's not about a rigid routine from day one, it's about small steps that build sleep foundations over time — giving your baby's circadian rhythm the chance to develop, so they can start telling day from night on their own.
And a note on the age chart: this is a guide, not a rulebook. Some babies have lower sleep needs and will sit toward the shorter end of these windows, others will run longer — follow your baby's cues over the clock.
Save this for a quick reminder to get you through those early days.

I’ve struggled to watch the Lindsay Clancy case. Three little kids lost their lives. I won’t comment on her specifically — I haven’t followed the details, and it’s not mine to weigh in on. But I’ve seen postpartum psychosis up close, professionally and personally, and I need to say this clearly:

It is always a medical emergency.

Not “something to watch.” Not “she’ll be fine in a few days.”

When I worked in hospital , this was part of the conversation every single time we sent a new mom home — not because we expected it, but because the people around her needed to know what to look for. And I watched it happen to someone I love — a sharp, high-flying professional who went from that to a new mom running on zero sleep, and something broke. Time in a mother-baby psychiatric unit, together with her baby, brought her back. That outcome is possible. But it takes someone catching it fast.

⚠️ Warning signs:
* Confusion or disorientation
* Delusions or hallucinations
* Paranoia
* Rapid mood swings / mania
* Not sleeping at all, even when she can
* Racing, disorganized thoughts
* Thoughts of harming herself or the baby
*
If you see this — in a mom you love, or in yourself — this is an ER visit

As a postpartum doula, I ask about this at every visit — how she’s actually sleeping, what her thoughts sound like at 3am, how she feels about the baby. Not once. Every time. Because early is everything, and prevention has to be louder than the aftermath.

Stories like this one make maternal mental health visible for a moment, and then the moment passes. I don’t want it to pass. I want the takeaway to be boring and structural: screening at every visit, not just the six-week checkup. Real, fast access to perinatal psychiatric care — not a three-month waitlist. Partners and family told what to watch for before they ever need to use it. And mothers believed, immediately, the first time they say something feels wrong.

Prevention doesn’t make headlines. But it’s the only version of this story I want to keep telling.
