What a crazy time to be alive! There’s so much opportunity to get involved and make a positive impact. What would you like to know more about? 🪸🪼🦈 by @conservationbella

Blue carbon refers to the carbon captured and stored by coastal and marine ecosystems, particularly mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrass meadows 🌱🐟

These ecosystems are incredibly efficient carbon sinks, making them vital assets against climate change 💪

Ocean acidification is driven by the absorption of increased CO2 in the atmosphere which changes the oceans chemistry over time (⬆️ acidity, ⬇️ pH).

This impacts the ability for essential marine calcifying organisms to building their shells and skeletons, creating a ripple effect through food webs and ecosystems 🐚🦪🦞🦀🪸🦐

Water absorbs much more heat than air, which is one reason the ocean plays such a massive role in regulating our climate 🌊 💪

My climate anxiety has been through the roof recently, but I’m sensing a movement and I’m excited to be one of the people that are going to make it happen. I hope this mantra comforts and inspires you by @conservationbella

How hard corals build their skeleton 🪸 🩻

Some species can grow up to 15cm a year while others grow less than 1cm, overall taking decades to build up the structures we see today!

I’m in Australia where the Humpback Whale seasonal migration is fully underway!
I’ve been seeing so many whales lately so I wanted to explain why they migrate and what makes their migration important for ocean health 🐋⭐️

*quick correction: they travel from the Arctic and Antarctic like seen in the map

Here’s some coral basics 🪸🤓. Next i’ll explain what coral bleaching is. Let me know in the comments if you have questions!

Crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS) are naturally occurring coral predators found across the Great Barrier Reef. However, environmental factors such as increased water temperatures and nutrient runoff can contribute to population outbreaks, allowing COTS numbers to reach levels that place significant pressure on coral reefs.

This is a problem because:
* An adult crown-of-thorns starfish can grow up to a meter across and can consume half their body weight of coral each day
* They are the fastest moving starfish
* Mature females can produce up to 100 million eggs when they spawn
* They have few natural predators

That’s why effective management of COTS outbreaks are an important part of reducing cumulative pressures on the reef to best support their resilience by @conservationbella
