Fantastic evening last night at the opening of @tate Modern’s ‘Light and Magic: The Birth of Art Photography’ exhibition, and so good to see so many friends there! I can’t describe how it feels to see my prints in such esteemed company.

Thank you @charmaine.toh and @genevieveyap_ for including my work in the display of handling prints, alongside prints by @katayounpd @hfletch and @matthewjbeach . Thank you also to Saskia Mercuri and @jeromemonnot for creating such a beautiful film of me making a platinum print. I’m looking forward to seeing the longer edit online!

This is a must-see exhibition which gives a fresh and interesting perspective on pictorialism. Very much looking forward to visiting again and spending some quality time there. This really is an exhibition that will reward slow and contemplative looking.

A long but very enjoyable day in the studio yesterday with @jeromemonnot and @guillaumevalli

This was the second day of a two-day shoot filming the making of a platinum-palladium print for the upcoming @tate Modern exhibition ‘Light and Magic: the Birth of Art Photography’

Alongside the film, two of my prints will be shown in a special display of handling prints, where visitors will be able to see unframed prints in a range of early photographic processes up close.

Very much looking forward to this exhibition! by @constanzaisazam

A much-needed quiet morning in the studio enjoying Christina Z. Anderson’s latest contribution to the field of alternative/early photographic processes. This book is a goldmine of information both for experienced practitioners and beginners, who will find the instructions clear and easy to follow. If you have even a passing interest in the platinum-palladium process, go buy this book! My favourite part is the detailed chapter on Japanese paper, I can’t wait to try some of these paper out!

Thank you @christinazanderson for inviting me to contribute work to this book!

Aurora Borealis | Northern Canada

Two-colour, hand-pulled photopolymer gravure.

I photographed this igloo beneath the Northern Lights in Northern Canada twenty-five years ago, when temperatures fell to -45°C. The igloo was illuminated by a single lantern placed inside.

Since then, the Arctic has warmed several times faster than the global average. Sea ice is retreating, permafrost is thawing, and the landscape is changing rapidly.

Photogravure is a traditional intaglio process in which a photographic image is etched into a plate, inked, wiped and transferred onto dampened paper under the pressure of an etching press. Each impression is individually printed by hand.

I inked the black areas of the plate while my wonderful tutor, @constanzaisazam at @luxdarkroom, applied the green of the aurora, carefully matching my original colour photograph. Working together seemed like two musicians playing a piano duet. Learn more about these techniques and Constanza's work at the new exhibition on art photography @tate modern.

The process gives the image a richness and physical quality quite different from a conventional photographic print.

Print details:

Two-colour, hand-pulled photopolymer gravure

Image: 16 × 11 inches (40.6 × 27.9 cm)
Sheet: 22 × 15 inches (55.9 × 38.1 cm)

Behind-the-scenes photos of the photogravure editioning process. These beautiful images by Ornan Rotem were printed by @constanzaisazam and will be exhibited next week at Burgh House alongside Num Stibbe’s ceramics. We can’t wait to see the exhibition!

Swipe to see the exhibition details and Kālī the cocker spaniel visiting the studio to inspect the final prints.

Printing large photogravures during extreme, back-to-back heatwaves has been hard work, but the results are worth it!

These prints of the trees of Hampstead Heath were commissioned by Ornan Rotem of @sylpheditions . They will be exhibited at @burghhouse1704 later this month alongside some wonderful ceramics by Num Stibbe @num.ceramics also inspired by the Heath. Bit late to the party but here's my obligatory eclipse photo. The sun only just made it out from behind the clouds as it started! by @constanzaisazam

I’ll be showing a selection of my work in platinum and photogravure, and running a live photogravure printing demo at The Other Photography Fair today. Come say hi! Doors close 4:30pm

Constanza giving a printing demo on last week’s Introduction to Photopolymer Gravure workshop. This allowed the students to see the full process of inking, wiping, and pulling a print in action before repeating the process with their own plates.

Constanza Isaza Martínez introduces the Lux Darkroom Exposure Time & Exposure Scale Calculator, a visual tool designed to simplify the often intimidating task of determining correct exposure times when working with alternative photographic processes. Instead of relying on repetitive test strips or complex manual calculations with a Stouffer Step Wedge, the calculator allows artists to identify maximum density directly on a digital step-wedge image and automatically computes the optimal exposure time. Suitable for negative processes such as cyanotype, platinum and salt printing, positive processes like carbon transfer, and dual-exposure photogravure. Free to use.
