🇦🇲🇺🇳 COP17 officially begins in Yerevan.

During the opening plenary session of the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, Armenia’s Minister of Environment, Hambardzum Matevosyan, was elected President of COP17 for a two-year term, assuming responsibility for leading the Conference proceedings.

In his opening remarks, the COP17 President emphasized the need to accelerate biodiversity action and turn commitments into tangible results to achieve the goals set for 2030.

Armenia’s COP17 Presidency will be guided by the principles of open dialogue, inclusiveness, and mutual respect, facilitating consensus among Parties and ensuring the meaningful participation of all stakeholders.

🌿 Yerevan becomes a platform for turning shared commitments into concrete action for nature and future generations.

🌿 Sustainable fashion is not just about what we wear, but also how it is made.

From sourcing raw materials and production to consumption, reuse, and waste management, every stage of the fashion industry is connected to nature and its resources.

But what if we started seeing waste not as something to throw away, but as an opportunity for something new?

🎥 In our COP17 report, representatives from different sectors explore fashion’s environmental impact, the challenges it faces, and the changes needed to build a more sustainable industry.

🏗️ Before COP17 began, a whole story was already unfolding here.

For months, work at the Meridian Expo Center never stopped. Day by day, hour by hour, the venue gradually transformed, preparing to welcome thousands of participants from around the world.

Behind every change and every detail were the unseen efforts of dedicated people, long working days, and sleepless nights.

🎥 These moments capture the journey of how Meridian was transformed into a space for international meetings, discussions, and important decisions.

🌎 A New Chapter in the History of Global Biodiversity Governance

The 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), held in Yerevan, has officially concluded.

Although negotiations were repeatedly prolonged, particularly during the plenary session of the working group, a historic achievement was reached: the rules of procedure of the Subsidiary Body on Article 8(j) of the Convention were officially adopted.

❗️ Why is this a landmark development?

Article 8(j) is a key provision of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity concerning Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

Implementing this mandate through a permanent subsidiary body fundamentally changes the balance of influence and participation.

✅ Permanent participation: It ensures that Indigenous Peoples and local communities have a permanent voice in decision-making processes at the institutional level, rather than participating through temporary, ad hoc groups.

✅ Rights and recognition:It ensures that traditional knowledge about nature and community-led conservation practices are incorporated into global climate policy on a legal basis.

✅ Direct impact: It strengthens financing and resource allocation mechanisms, making them directly accessible to communities that have demonstrated their effectiveness in protecting ecosystems around the world. by @cop17armenia
