Fascinating
This is a Robin's Pincushion, also known as a Rose Bedeguar Gall or Mossy Rose Gall.
This gall is caused by the larvae of a tiny gall wasp.
It's found on the stems of wild roses, such as Dog Roses or Field Roses
The gall develops when the female gall wasp lays eggs in a leaf bud, and the larvae secrete chemicals that stimulate abnormal plant growth, forming the distinctive moss-like structure.
The galls start green and turn reddish as they mature in late summer and early autumn.
Adult wasps emerge from the gall in the spring of the following year. by @corinnewright5481
