Our lives are meant to be bigger than our jobs 🫶🏼

As someone who does love my job and the career I’m building, I know there can be space for both. I’ve lived the extremes - my finance career took 70-90 hours of my week every single week of the year (yes, the holidays too) and now I have a more balanced corporate job that allows me to continue building my career while prioritizing the things that really matter to me outside of work.

Work to live > live to work. Every. Single. Day.

Welcome to Corporate on Her Terms!

Let’s dive in. My name is Olivia and I’m 28 years old living in Dallas, Texas. I’m currently the Vice President of Growth Strategy for a private equity owned pediatric healthcare provider. I recently made a HUGE career shift and left my job at a private equity firm after starting out in investment banking in the energy industry.

Why am I here you might ask? Long story short - I’ve been through *a lot* over the last six years and decided to create the platform I wish I had access to throughout my own journey. Personally, I just don’t think that many of today’s corporate leaders totally understand the emerging generations’ perspectives on how we want to define ourselves as professionals, the ways we want to learn and achieve success, and what we’re willing to sacrifice to reach those goals. In my own journey, that’s left me often feeling misunderstood and longing to find more people leading by examples I aligned with.

So, as the saying goes: be the change you want to see in the world! I’ll be sharing my very unaesthetic but real life experiences, learnings, and advice in hopes it resonates with others going through their own early career development and trying to figure out how grow professionally without compromising their well being, priorities and values.

To get to this point, I’ve experienced really high highs and very low lows (as seen in this video in a very raw and honest way). BUT I feel very grateful to be making progress towards better balance between my professional growth and personal priorities. I’m still learning, but I hope that this page helps others like me feel less alone and inspired to create our new definition for success together.

Let’s do this 🫶🏼

I worked in high finance, so I know a thing or two about performative “productivity” ⬇️

There are a loooot of habits in corporate culture that might *look* like they drive impact & success… but don’t be fooled. Most of them are really just performative.

They make you look busy.
They make you look dedicated.
They make you look like a “hard worker”

But they don’t actually make you better at your job (which is what actually matters !!!!). In fact, most of them just burn through your mental and emotional energy so aggressively that you have less capacity for the work that actually matters and the life you life outside of work.

I mean things like:
• acting stressed or with panicked urgency to prove you care
• offering to work over PTO for non-urgent matters
• responding to every ping or email instantly
• bragging about your late night / weekend work
• trying to be one of the “bros” rather than being yourself just to fit in
• being the first online and last offline (and making sure people know it)
• filling your calendar with meetings so you seem “busy”
• saying yes to everything so you look like a go-getter
• creating extra busy work that’s *not* value add and overworks your teams just to show off how much you work

I’ve worked in really competitive, intense environments throughout my career in investment banking and private equity. I’ve been drained by performative work and corporate theater. And I’ve learned that the ones who are *actually* productive and successful do this instead:
✅ protect their time
✅ focus only on work that moves the needle
✅ don’t confuse being busy with being effective
✅ don’t minimize their strengths to blend in
✅ remembers impact > effort gets you noticed

The goal isn’t to LOOK productive, it’s to actually perform well, but without destroying your boundaries and nervous system in the process.

Sorry, work is not #1 in my life.

And it shouldn’t be yours either. Even if you’re grinding to make something happen for yourself, it’s probably because of the opportunities it will afford you to enjoy your life more outside of work. Emphasis on the *outside*

Everything we do at work is to enable what we can make happen in the rest of our lives… never forget that.

Work to live > live to work

Each personality needs time to shine, am I right!?

It’s called *duality* and it’s the definition of my entire existence. It’s exhausting to be so stressed and serious all the time, let your freak fly!!

Meetings that should’ve been emails… the tagline for corporate America!

And honestly, the more senior you get, the more meetings you get. Hard pass! Send me an email, please and thank you!

It’s not as glamorous as it seems 🤣

The ones who get it, get it.

Behind the titles, fancy outfits, big meetings and impressive LinkedIn updates, we’re all just regular people trying to get through our to-do lists, figure out what we’re eating for lunch and enjoy a few minutes of peace.

And personally, I find that pretty comforting.

Corporate America has us all brainwashed, I swear.

I literally cringe remembering the actual fear and anxiety I used to get whenever I had to go to the dentist, an annual check up, you name it.

We are not children. We don’t need to ask for a hall pass to use the bathroom. We’re all adults. We all have personal shit we have to attend to - that’s life.

Don’t give your job or your boss more power over you by allowing them to dictate how you handle your personal life. Get your work done, communicate, and take care of yourself however you need to. It’s not that serious

Let this be your sign. You know who you are.

Maybe you’re not exhausted because you’re doing too much. Maybe you’re exhausted because nothing you do ever gets to feel like enough.

You finish the project, but think about what you could’ve done better. You work out, but not as often as you “should.”
You’re doing well at work, but wonder if you should be doing more. You show up for the people you love, but feel guilty about the text you forgot to answer.

There’s always something to improve. Something you’re behind on. Some version of yourself you think you should be doing a better job of becoming.

And when you’re ambitious, it’s really easy to convince yourself that this pressure is productive. That being hard on yourself is what keeps you motivated.

But you’re allowed to want more for yourself without constantly being disappointed in who you are right now. You can be ambitious without making your entire life a performance review.

You don’t have to lower your standards, you might just need to stop moving the finish line every time you reach it.

Doing your job is one thing, proving that you’re good at it is another job entirely.

Especially when you’re ambitious, it can become this constant performance: Did I respond fast enough? Should I volunteer? Do they know I did this? Should I speak up so they know I’m engaged? Am I in the office enough? Did that person think my question was smart? Should I be doing more? Does my boss think I’m working hard? Am I getting enough face time? Is everyone else ahead of me?

And eventually you’re spending almost as much energy monitoring your performance of ambition as you are actually doing the work.

I’m not scared to admit that I did this for YEARS. I thought being ambitious meant always needing to prove that I was ambitious.

But honestly, I think I’ve gotten better at my job as I’ve stopped doing that.

I raise my hand when I actually have something to contribute. I work hard when the work requires it. I let good work speak for itself sometimes. And I’m a lot less interested in performing ‘busy’ so everyone knows how much I have going on.

Obviously, you have to advocate for yourself. You have to make your work visible. I’m not saying sit quietly in the corner and hope somebody notices you. But there is a hugeeee difference between advocating for yourself and spending your entire career auditioning for the job you already have, and I think a lot of us are exhausted from the audition.

Time to hang it up and focus on what you do best. The results will come.

Take the damn vacation.

Without worrying about work, without making unnecessary accommodations to join meetings that could be emails, without taking “one quick look” at your inbox to ease your anxiety.

It’s not that deep. It’s just a job. A job you may love, or you may not, but either way, it’s just something that is supposed to enable you to live and ENJOY the rest of your life.

Key word: enjoy.

Hard to enjoy your life when you keep letting work be the #1 priority. Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you set that standard, then you’ll get held to it. Only you can draw the boundaries you want to be respected. Only you.

Save this as a reminder before your next trip so you feel confident that you can actually unplug and it will be okay. I promise 🫶🏼

When the salary goes straight towards easing the stress that earning said salary causes 🙄

Not to worry, @thenowmassage makes this monthly treat affordable while still keeping things feeling luxurious. Ily 🫶🏼
