Meet one of our members Maimi Niina @cos.miel in Maryland, USA 🇺🇸 We asked Maimi about ikebana, learning to work with plant material, developing your own point of view - and what keeps her curious. My favourite: “Leave room for humor, surprise, and weirdness. Not everything has to be pretty.” If you take a look at Maimi’s instagram you will see her personality injected in every single arrangement. Not only is Maimi an amazing artist but she has also started taking on the task of growing flowers too 👏👏 Keep doing amazing things, we love you Maimi!!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #ikebana #sogetsu #flowerarrangement #flowers by @cos.miel
No flowers, today. #6 Wood carved vase with woven palm and dried grass by @cos.miel

MONSTERA MONSTER 👹 A day late for Halloween. Monstera, sugar maple, and asparagus fern. A little botanical mischief. Made in class with @sandra.marker Nov. 1st #草月流 #SogetsuIkebana #ContemporaryIkebana #BotanicalArt #MonsteraMonster by @cos.miel
Three Branches Malus branches, tiny red fruits, and gravity. #草月#ikebana #floralart #botanicalart #maryland by @cos.miel
Going Out in a Blaze 🍂🔥 The garden’s last hurrah. Golden foliage, fading zinnias, and the season’s final dahlias. I really couldn’t help myself! Sogetsu tsubo style: two wired branches acting as levers, holding everything in place through balance and tension. No kenzan. No chicken wire. Just technique. And a massive vase full of water that turned the photo shoot into a workout. #いけばな #草月 #tsubo #autumnvibes🍁 #marylandflorist by @cos.miel
Before the Pastelón: Studies in Plantain 🍌 There are about 30 pounds of plantains ripening on a stalk in my mother’s living room, and we’ve been eating them for four days straight. Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Boiled, broiled, fried into tostones. We’re running out of ideas. For my Miami ikebana challenge, I put the entire bunch to work. What started as one arrangement turned into a series of studies in line, mass, balance, and movement. Same materials, different compositions. The sheer weight of the fruit made the whole exercise slightly ridiculous. Next up: a massive batch of Dominican pastelón. But first, art. Which version is your favorite? #ikebana #草月 #platanopower🇩🇴 #botanicalsculpture #caribbean by @cos.miel
A Small Excavation Day whatever of my Miami challenge: one ikebana a day, found materials only, working fast. Today’s unconventional materials came from my late father’s chaotic office. He was a mechanical engineer for @komatsuglobal , and my earliest memories of him are from the Ecuadorian jungle, where we lived during the construction of the Daule Peripa dam. Industrial valves, tangled cables, a miniature bulldozer, and a banana blossom from the garden. An unexpected excavation of memory. #ikebana #草月 #memory #unconventionalmaterials #いけばな by @cos.miel
This arrangement is so weirdly Miami. The Miami I grew up in. 🌴 Persimmons grown on a friend’s coconut farm in the Redland (yes, persimmons in Miami 🤯), tropical foliage foraged from another friend’s yard, and this wonderfully bizarre vase from my mother’s house. The vase itself is a whole situation. A traditional European urn with a touch of Chinoiserie thrown in because why not? None of it should necessarily go together, but somehow it does. A little tropical chaos, a little cultural confusion, and a swimming pool for good measure. No flowers purchased. Just making ikebana with whatever I can get my hands on. I kinda love this one. 🍊 #ikebana sort of #草月 #foraged #botanicalart #miami by @cos.miel
A little challenge for myself while I’m in Miami: make ikebana every day using only what I can find in the backyard, around the house, or my friends’ gardens. No buying flowers. No planning ahead. Just found materials, quick decisions, and intuition. I’m also experimenting with speed, spontaneity, and letting go of perfection. Less fussing, more trusting my instincts and seeing what happens. Today’s ingredients: a withered orchid stem and some wildly colorful croton. Can I keep this up all week? Let’s find out 🌿 After all, I need to make a lot of bad ikebana to get good at it. 😂 #草月 #ikebana #いけばな #improvisation #foundmaterials by @cos.miel
First arrangement since Morocco, made in my mother’s backyard in Miami. The vessel: an antique emerald green ceramic piece I found in a little shop in Fez. The materials: dried palm frond ends scattered all over the backyard. Free, abundant, and wonderfully weird. I experimented with adding a few fragrant ylang ylang flowers, but ultimately preferred the palm doing its own thing. Moroccan antique meets Miami yard debris. 🌴 #草月 #いけばな #botanicalart #tropical #miami by @cos.miel
Blown Away 🌬️ A rooftop ikebana made in a hurry, with the wind and circumstances doing some of the arranging. 😂 We were so blown away by the Sahara that our one day in the Merzouga region turned into two. More time to explore the dunes, fossil beds, and old mines. And apparently, make some ikebana. Dried unidentified branches, amouga (I think?), a few ammonite fossils found near the old desert mines, and a borrowed silver ashtray from the riad. No scissors, no kenzan, and a sandstorm rolling in. Our driver kept playing Tinariwen as we drove through the Sahara. That hypnotic Tuareg desert blues stayed with me. So naturally, it’s the soundtrack to this little desert experiment. 🎶 #ikebana #草月 #sahara #foraged #botanicalart by @cos.miel
