🪡 We're running it back!! Join us again this Fall for the next cohort of Stitching our Stories with fabric artist and inter*disciplinary educator, Kelsey Reynolds ( @kelseyreynolds1 ).

Inspired by the legacy of the Freedom Quilting Bee and the creative traditions of Black women artists like Faith Ringgold, bell hooks, Alice Walker, and Nikki Giovanni, this four-part workshop series invites participants to slow down, gather in community, and practice the art of whole cloth hand quilting— no experience necessary, just a willingness to learn and create.

Together, we will learn simple, powerful stitches and be introduced to basic embroidery and appliqué techniques, while also engaging with short readings and personal writing. Each participant will create their own quilt over the course of the series, which will be shared at a community showcase on November 22nd.

Sliding Scale: $65 - $95 Workshop attendee ticket (registration fee includes all materials).

Rest Stops: An Altadena Garden Initiative by Kenturah Davis

Co-presented by Crenshaw Dairy Mart and Destination Crenshaw

The Crenshaw Dairy Mart and Destination Crenshaw are pleased to co-present Kenturah Davis: Rest Stops as part of a post-wildfire garden initiative started in Altadena, California, led by artist and native Kenturah Davis. In response to the loss of her family homes and surrounding community in the Eaton Fire, Davis envisions a series of sensory gardens offering moments of rest and renewal amid the scorched landscape. Inspired by Black quilting traditions, the project stitches together a network of green spaces designed to heal both land and community. Kenturah Davis: Rest Stops is an exhibition of the artist’s prototypes and drawings reimagining public and private thresholds across Altadena, offering resilient, restorative spaces which support soil remediation and lay the groundwork for restoring the natural habitats that have long defined Altadena’s foothills.

Altadena, nestled in the San Gabriel foothills, has long been a refuge, especially for Black families who built generational stability and cultural vibrancy despite redlining and housing discrimination. For decades, it stood as one of the few places in Los Angeles County where Black homeownership flourished. Today, the aftermath of the Eaton Fire threatens that legacy- placing generational wealth and long-standing community ties at risk. In response, this project proposes adaptive gardens using natural and native materials to support reflection, resilience, and ecological renewal. As families throughout Altadena rebuild, these spaces aim to help safeguard belonging, continuity, and rootedness in Altadena. Rest Stops is also a 3 year project by the artist and her studio, Accordion Press, inviting families who lost their homes to steward a garden on their burned lot, choosing from a catalogue of seating, shade, native and edible plants, including species known for detoxifying soils and supporting local wildlife-creating landscapes that are both fire-resilient and restorative.

noé olivas transforms everyday materials, including tires and industrial objects, through the
Chicanx spirit of rasquachismo and the Black Assemblage Movement of the 1960s and 1970s.
By creating new forms from existing materials, his work reflects on the poetics and realities of
labor, family histories, spiritual traditions, and the visual culture of Southern California. His tire
sculptures draw upon the histories embedded within the tire industry and its lasting impact on
both communities and the environment. Embracing traditions of upcycling and reuse, olivas reimagines discarded tires, materials commonly transformed into decor, planter pots, retaining
walls, and signage, by using clay to create sculptural forms that carry new meaning. Through these transformations, familiar objects become vessels of hope, resilience, and renewal, creating space for reflection on our relationship to labor, the environment, and the possibilities of
transformation.

alexandre ali reza dorriz’s interdisciplinary practice spans photography, film, installation, and text, examining how legal and economic systems shape relationships between natural resources, such as land and water. Drawing from legal doctrines and financial markets, his work traces the infrastructures of extraction and the ways they continue to define contemporary landscapes. dorriz reveals systems of ownership, speculation, and resource diversion, inviting viewers to reconsider landscapes as contested sites where ecological, political, and cultural histories converge.
