Maxwell's 201 against Afghanistan taught me something about life

With Glenn Maxwell retiring from international cricket, I went back to his 201* against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup. Australia were 91/7 chasing 292, and the game looked over.

Then Maxwell did something unbelievable. He could barely stand, was struggling with cramps and could hardly run, and Cummins just stayed there with him. Somehow, Australia won.

I know it is just a cricket match, but that innings has stayed with me. There are times in life when everything seems to be going wrong and you feel like you have lost already. That innings reminds me that sometimes things can change when you least expect them.

I have watched cricket for more than 20 years, and I honestly do not think I will ever see another innings like that. Thanks for the memories, Maxi. Was this more than just a great ODI knock?

Alastair Cook made batting for hours look easy. He was not everyone's favourite batsman to watch. He was not flashy, he did not play many fancy shots, and sometimes he took forever to score. But once he settled in, getting him out was a real headache. He scored a century on his Test debut against India in 2006, and then scored another one in his final Test, against the same opposition, in 2018. 12,472 Test runs, 33 centuries, 161 Tests. Ridiculous numbers for an opener. And in the 2010-11 Ashes in Australia, he made 766 runs in five Tests, in Australia's own backyard. He had his weaknesses, especially outside off stump. But his patience, and his ability to grind out runs, were incredible. How many modern openers would have the patience to bat the way Cook did?

Alastair Cook made batting for hours look easy

I know Cook wasn't everyone's favourite batsman to watch, but I really enjoyed watching him bat.

He wasn't flashy, didn't play too many fancy shots, and sometimes took forever to score. But once he settled in, getting him out was a real headache.

One thing I always found interesting was that he scored a century on his Test debut against India in 2006 and then scored another in his final Test against the same opposition in 2018.

12,472 Test runs, 33 centuries and 161 Tests. Those are ridiculous numbers for an opener.

And his performance in the 2010-11 Ashes in Australia was something else. 766 runs in five Tests, against Australia in their own backyard.

He had his weaknesses, especially outside off stump, but his patience and ability to grind out runs were incredible.

I sometimes wonder how many modern openers would have the patience to bat the way Cook did.

Where do you guys rank him among the all-time great Test openers? Personally, I'd have him pretty high up there.

DRS is done. The first gameplay preview is up on the subreddit.

Close calls can now be reviewed, with a third umpire view built to feel like real cricket. You also get a sense of how sure your batter or bowler is about the call, but that confidence is not always right.

E4U is back with a second video.

Ed covered the game in August and has just posted a second video after the recent updates. He runs a Pakistan Super League season. It goes badly, two wins and eleven losses, but he still enjoyed it and liked the new animations and UI. Worth a watch on E4U.

Before Dale Steyn, South Africa had Allan Donald. Raw pace, aggression, accuracy, and a bowling action that made him one of the most feared fast bowlers of his generation.

Donald finished with 330 Test wickets at an average of 22.25, and another 272 in one day cricket. He was the first South African to reach 300 Test wickets.

His most memorable moment came against Michael Atherton at Trent Bridge in 1998, a relentless spell of fast bowling that remains one of Test cricket's great individual battles.

Many also remember the run out against Australia in the 1999 World Cup semi final. But one moment should never overshadow a remarkable career.

In an era with Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Curtly Ambrose and Glenn McGrath, Donald belonged among the very best.

How frightening was Allan Donald at his peak? And where would you rank him among the greatest fast bowlers of the 1990s? by @cricketmanagementtycoon

Michael Bevan was one of the finest ODI middle-order batters Australia ever produced. His ODI numbers speak for themselves: 232 matches, 6,912 runs, a batting average of 53.58, 46 fifties and 6 centuries, and 67 not-outs. One of his greatest innings came against the West Indies in 1996. Australia were 38 for 6 chasing 173, but Bevan scored an unbeaten 78 and hit a boundary off the final ball to win the match. He wasn't known for hitting massive sixes. His strength was rotating the strike, building partnerships with the tail, and knowing exactly when to accelerate. For a middle-order batter playing in the 1990s, averaging over 53 was remarkable. Would Michael Bevan be just as effective in modern ODI cricket, or has the role of the finisher changed too much? by @cricketmanagementtycoon

Jack Iverson – The Australian who bowled the carrom ball 50 years before Ajantha Mendis

Long before Ajantha Mendis made the carrom ball famous, Australian spinner Jack Iverson was troubling batsmen with a similar finger-flicking technique back in 1950.

Iverson developed his unusual grip while experimenting with table tennis balls during World War II. Using his bent middle finger, he could turn the cricket ball both ways, making him extremely difficult to read.

He made his Test debut at 35 and played just 5 Tests, taking 21 wickets at an incredible average of 15.23 during the 1950-51 Ashes. His international career lasted just one series.

More than 50 years later, Ajantha Mendis brought a similar delivery back into the spotlight.

Do you think Jack Iverson would have been just as effective in modern T20 cricket, or would today's batters have figured him out?

History Will Be Kinder to KL Rahul

KL Rahul is arguably one of the most underrated players in Indian cricket and IPL history.

A 14-ball fifty in the IPL back in 2018, an Orange Cap with 670 runs in 2020, and years of consistent performances across different franchises.

Yet, much of the conversation around him revolves around his strike rate, occasional failures, and cautious approach.

We often forget how technically gifted and versatile he is. He has played different roles, adapted his batting, and carried enormous expectations throughout his career.

I genuinely believe history will be kinder to KL Rahul than the current generation of cricket fans.

Do you think we will appreciate KL Rahul more once he retires?
