Watching the faculty clinic from my balcony, and then walking in for a full restorative dentistry schedule. 💉The little luxury of living right across from the dental clinic👩🏻‍⚕️

Can’t believe I’m just a few months away from earning my second dental licence, in a whole new country, in my 20s. Sometimes the life you’re working so hard for becomes real before you even have time to process it🤌🏻

I walked through the collections of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd), one of the world’s oldest surgical institutions, founded in 1505.🏛️

In 1699, the College began assembling a medical collection of anatomical specimens, surgical instruments and teaching materials for the education of future surgeons.👩🏻‍⚕️

As the collection expanded, it was given a permanent home at Surgeons’ Hall, which opened to the public in 1832, bringing over five centuries of surgical and medical history together under one roof, in Edinburgh.⚕️

As a dental/medical student, would this museum be on your Edinburgh list?

Dentistry in Edinburgh goes back centuries, but formal dental education began in 1860, with the establishment of the Edinburgh Dental Dispensary, followed by the Edinburgh Dental Hospital and School in 1879.🏛️

What makes the Dental Collection at Surgeons’ Hall Museums so special is that it preserves the story of dentistry before it became the modern profession we know today 🦷

You’ll find early extraction instruments, historic dentures and prosthetics, dental specimens, teaching models, old equipment, artwork and a recreated 19th-century dental surgery, a fascinating look at how dentistry evolved from painful, primitive procedures into modern clinical dental care that we practice in our offices today🏥👩🏻‍⚕️

Part 2 is up on the feed now.

Dentistry before ultrasonic scalers and high speed hand pieces. 🦷

A major part of the collection at @surgeonshall came from John Menzies Campbell, a Glasgow dentist and prominent dental historian. Over his lifetime, he built an extensive collection of historic dental instruments, artefacts, books, prints and other material documenting the development of dentistry and then donated his collection to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. ⚕️
