When the odds stack up against you, let your work stack up higher.

If your child is doing speed training, how do you know it’s actually working?

That’s one of the things I love about our work with EXOS.

Players have individual profiles that track their testing numbers and progress, so we can see whether they’re actually getting faster over time.

Don’t guess. Measure it.

Drills make players look good in training.
Decisions make players look good in games.

Today was all decisions - unscripted 1v1s, attacking and defending, where she had to read space and trust her instincts every rep.

Into Space: Passing Grid

A simple pattern we love for building rhythm. Play the ball into space, let your teammate run onto it, then follow your pass to the next spot.

Top is our session, bottom is the same drill animated in Croqa, our drill app.
Save it if you’d like to try it with your team.

We’ve somehow convinced ourselves that the more serious youth football training becomes, the better our children will be.

More structure. More instructions. More pressure. Less freedom.

We celebrate sessions where every child looks disciplined and every movement looks perfect.

But are they actually learning how to play?

Where’s the freedom to experiment? To make mistakes? To solve problems without a coach giving them every answer?

Where’s the laughter, the friendships, the arguments, the competition, and the joy of figuring things out together?

Those experiences aren’t distractions from development. They’re part of it.

Don’t misunderstand me. Children need discipline, accountability, and challenging environments.

But the quality of training isn’t measured by how serious it looks. It’s measured by what children are learning, how they’re learning it, and whether they still want to come back.

We need to stop confusing the appearance of development with development itself.

Hobby? No. This is the whole life. (Eating comes second.)

Technique isn’t only something you build first and then “test” under pressure.

For us, some of the best technical development happens while the player is already dealing with a defender, space, timing, and a decision.

The touch still improves.
The dribbling still improves.
The receiving still improves.

But now the technique has to solve a real problem.

Train the technique inside the problem.

The pass is technical. Knowing when to release it is understanding the game.
