McNair Scholars Program at CU Boulder supports First-Gen & low-income or underrepresented students for research & graduate study
POSTS STORIES REELS
This past Wednesday marked 40 years since the Space Shuttle Challenger tragedy on January 28, 1986, when we lost seven brave astronauts including Dr. Ronald E. McNair. Dr. McNair was more than an astronaut. he was a physicist, a saxophonist, a martial artist, and a trailblazer who became only the second African American to travel to space. Born in Lake City, South Carolina during segregation, he refused to leave a library as a child until he was allowed to check out books, foreshadowing a lifetime of breaking barriers. He earned his PhD in physics from MIT and conducted groundbreaking research in laser physics before joining NASA. His legacy lives on through the McNair Scholars Program, which supports first-generation students pursuing graduate education - embodying his belief that dedication and perseverance can overcome any obstacle. Dr. McNair’s journey from a small Southern town to the stars reminds us that excellence knows no boundaries. This week we honor his memory, his achievements, and his enduring impact on the students who carry his name forward. His life stands as a testament to the power of dreams, education, and unwavering determination. by @cubouldermcnair
Hello! We are proud to announce thr start of our McNair Scholars Spotlight Program! Get a chance to meet our scholars and the amazing work they have been engaging in this year! First up is our Social Media & Brand Strategy Lead, Junior Chapman: Hey! My Name Junior Chapman and I am a 5th year undergraduate student majoring in Sociology and Japanese with a minor in Ethnic Studies. Outside of his studies, I serve as the Marketing Coordinator for the Cultural Events Board: a Joint Board of CU Boulder’s Student Government, as well as the Social Media and Brand Strategy Lead within our McNair Leadership Council! Additionally, I am a researcher at the Laboratory for Ritual Arts and Pedagogy within CU’s School of Education, and an administrative associate at the Center for African and African American Studies. I am so grateful for the opportunity McNair has given me to freely express and breathe life into my work and research! The resources and support I have received in my time as a McNair scholar has been invaluable to my development as a scholar and has made my dream of earning my PhD and a tenure track professorship at a 4-year institution feel within reach! My McNair research sits within intersections of Black Male studies, Ethnomusicology, and Critical Hip-Hop studies. My work focuses on ongoing definitions, re-definitions, and renegotiations of Black Masculinities in Hip-Hop music, exploring these themes throughexpressions of Black Masculine Self-Love and Black Love Stories. Pulling from Black Feminist traditions, Afro-Surrealist epistemes, and theories of collective trauma and healing, my research examines new paradigms for realizing alternative Black masculinities and Black Love within the contemporary Hip-Hop movement. by @cubouldermcnair

Yesterday’s Grad Student Panel for our scholars was a celebration of connection, mentorship, and community! 🎉 We had the pleasure of hearing from an incredible group of panelists — Dr. Sarah Gonzalez-Coffin (@dr_gonzalezcoffin), Anna Kulikova (@kulikovson) , Sitashma Thapa (@c2thapaaa), Austin Shoemaker, and Marshall Washington — who generously shared their time, wisdom, and experiences with our McNair Scholars. Our “speed menting” format made for an energetic, welcoming afternoon full of meaningful conversations and some exciting new mentor-mentee matches. This is what the McNair community is all about! A huge thank you to our panelists for showing up for our scholars. Your commitment makes all the difference. 💙 #McNairScholars #GradStudentPanel #FirstGenStrong #McNairCUBoulder by @cubouldermcnair

Your pathway to graduate school starts here! 🎓✨ Had an amazing time this week sharing what McNair is all about with students from the McNeil Scholars Program. The energy in the room was everything — so excited for what’s ahead! 💛 #McNairScholars #CUBoulder #GradSchool #FirstGen #TRIOWorks by @cubouldermcnair

Next up in our student spotlight series is Noah Mendez. Please give Noah a warm welcome to McNair! 🎉🎊 My name is Noah, and I’m a fourth year Ecology and Evolutionary Biology major, with a minor in Art Practices. In addition to my studies, I work in the Fierer Lab under Dr Noah Fierer studying microbiology through researching temperature and water-availability tolerance in Antarctic microbes and CO2 respiration by microbes in different types of soil with post-doctorate researchers. I transferred from Red Rocks Community College where I had been encouraged to apply to the McNair Scholars program and was excited to be offered a spot in the program at CU Boulder. Being a McNair Scholar is an exciting step towards achieving my goals through education, towards a career in research, and is a way to make my path to a graduate degree more visible. Being someone born in the US to immigrants, being a first-generation college student, and having an impoverished background has made the path through an undergraduate degree a struggle and made a graduate degree seem just out of reach, but being part of this program puts my dreams in the palm of my hand, and now I can have support I didn’t expect through the journey that I’ve set myself out to complete. by @cubouldermcnair
Come to our workshop tonight! Don’t forget we are serving dinner. 📝 by @cubouldermcnair
