Feminist jewelry for the witch inside | Jewelry by @caffeinatedlinz | San Diego

Hi! My name is Lindsay, and I’m the artist behind Curious Metalworks! Even though I work a 9 to 5, sometimes I like to pretend I’m a faerie in the forest. I make jewelry that makes me feel wild, even while working a desk job.

I wanted to share this new collection of antler inspired jewelry. The necklace is fused silver, moss again, and dendritic agate, and the ring is Brecciated Jasper and silver. There will be more to come!

I love layering silver to create detailed, lifelike pieces without carving it in wax first. To do this, I use a process called “sweat soldering”- essentially, you flow the solder on one side of the piece, and then stack them together like a sandwich and solder them together. So much fun!

The crow continues to get more detailed, but I still have a long way to go!

Nothing is better for my mental health than spending the day in the studio, particularly if it means I get to be behind the torch. The fused antlers became part of one of my favorite necklaces that makes me feel like a faerie queen when I wear it.

My husband and I have our first art show together in August at @eastcountyartassociation so I need to start making some pieces. The theme is life and death, so I’m starting with some skeleton crows.

We have been in the middle of a record breaking heat wave in San Diego. I’m talking 100 degree, not leaving the house, praying your AC doesn’t die heat. As a result, I haven’t been able to spend time in my garage for fear of melting.

Well the heat has broke, rain is coming, and I’m spending as much time as possible in my garage studio! Tina doesn’t mind serving as my studio assistant as long as she is guaranteed scritches.

Something I always tell new metalsmith - you will break a LOT of saw blades. I was expecting this to be a video showing how many saw blades I broke, but this one turned out to be lucky!

This is going to a belt buckle for a friend who wants to honor her aunt by repurposing her old jewelry. Stay tuned for the full result!

I get a lot of questions when I wear these earrings.

Usually, people ask if these are made by CAD, or if they were first carved in wax and cast in silver. These are actually created using techniques called chasing and repoussé, a jewelry technique that has existed since the 3rd century BCE. Examples can be found in ancient Egypt, Rome, and Greece.

As the world gets more automated, it is more important than ever to preserved these ancient techniques. I was lucky enough to go to a workshop at @theloftjewelrystudio with @anditerrymetalsmith in Irvine to learn this skill and will be adapting it into future projects!

I am so lucky to have friends supportive of my jewelry journey! I’m so happy these flower hoops are going to a good home!

The torch is the best part of metalworking. The fire is your tool, and you can use it like a scalpel or a blunt weapon depending what you’re doing.

When doing chasing and repousse, you sometimes have to burn off the extra pitch. As it’s VERY flammable, you have to be careful not to leave too much on. In this case, there was only a little left, so instead of scraping it off I used the torch!

I am just so MAD. We as women deserve better than what is going on right now.
We deserve to walk at night without being afraid.
We deserve to go to a party and end the night in our own bed.
We deserve to wear an outfit without a man taking it as an invitation.
We deserve to feel safe.
We deserve to be safe.

Jane Doe is so brave, and I hope that justice will be served. In the meantime, I will be channeling my rage into my art. If you want to know why I chose this piece to work on today, rotate your screen to the left. by @curiousmetalworks

I am not a minimalist.

I want pieces that make a statement, that make you ask questions.

These are reminders of paintings, past memories, a flower blooming. They are anything but ordinary. by @curiousmetalworks

This piece is cast from a real taxidermied squirrel paw, and the nails require a bit of a manicure before I finish the piece.

I’ll be getting these ready for Halloween but let me know if you are interested in reserving one! by @curiousmetalworks
