The haunting of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel

In the heart of Hollywood stands the Roosevelt Hotel, a luxurious landmark that has hosted some of the biggest names in entertainment, but also considered one of the most haunted places in Los Angeles.

Visitors and staff have experienced unsettling encounters over the years. Famous figures stayed there, and some people think they may have never truly left.

Marilyn Monroe is said to be one of the hotel’s most famous spectral residents. She lived in the hotel for two years while her career was taking off, usually in Suite 1200, where her presence has reportedly lingered the longest.

Visitors claim to have seen the reflection of a blonde woman who bears a striking resemblance to Monroe in a full-length mirror. Some people say they’ve glimpsed her ghostly image even in the crowded lobby.

Another famous ghost is the one of the actor Montgomery Clift. Known for his roles in classic films, he resided in Room 928 for three months, where he used to play his trumpet.

Guests who stayed there reported hearing the sound of a trumpet echoing through the walls, and others claimed to have felt a strange presence in the room.

Some visitors said they’ve seen Clift’s spirit pacing the halls, seemingly rehearsing his lines as he used to do years before.
However, these aren’t the only spirits haunting the Roosevelt’s hallways. Some visitors have reported seeing ghostly figures of children playing in the corridors or hearing small footsteps running through the hotel.

A little girl in a blue dress has been seen in the upper floors, where she is said to vanish around corners or disappear as people approach her.

Besides this, certain areas of the hotel seem to be paranormal hotspots.

In the Blossom Ballroom, where the first Academy Awards took place, guests and staff reported seeing flickering lights and feeling an invisible hand brushing against them.

Some people also claimed to have seen shadow figures around the pool, while others reported hearing splashing sounds when the area is completely empty.

People have also described feeling sudden chills or hearing whispers when they step inside the hotel’s elevators.

The history of the iconic Hollywood Roosevelt hotel

The Hollywood Roosevelt hotel, located in the Hollywood Boulevard, has been one of Los Angeles’ most luxurious holiday destinations for more than a century.

It opened on May 15th, 1927, financed by a group that included Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford and Sid Grauman. Named after the President Theodore Roosevelt, the construction took nearly a year to be completed and it cost $2.5 million.

On May 16th, 1929, the hotel hosted the first Academy Awards ceremony in the Blossom Ballroon, with about 270 people in attendance. The guest ticket prices cost $5, 15 statuettes were awarded, and the ceremony only lasted 15 minutes.

Between the 1930s and the 1950s the hotel was the scene of many a Hollywood moments. Carole Lombard and Clark Gable carried out their affair in the penthouse of the 12th floor. Shirley Temple took her first tap-dancing lessons from Bill “Bojangles” Robinsons there. And Marilyn Monroe famously lived on and off at the hotel just as her fame was on the rise.

In 1950 it was announced that the hotel would be adding a large pool area with low-rise bungalow accomodation that would cost $1 million.

The renovations and ownership changes continued throughout the 1960s and 70s, as the hotel tried to keep up with the time.

In 1985, the Radisson Hotel group acquired the hotel and gave it the renovation that it deserved. They spent $35 million to bring the hotel back to its Spanish Colonial Revival glory.

A couple years later, the artist David Hockney was commissioned to paint the hotel’s pool.

In 1991, the Hollywood Roosevelt was declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.

Following another two renovations in 2005 and 2015 that cost $55 million, the hotel’s popularity increased again.

Now, the place is fully owned and operated as an independent hotel. The building is among the most recognizable landmarks in downtown Hollywood.

Monte Cristo Homestead: Australia’s Most Haunted House (2/2)

The second pregnant maid gave birth to a son named Harold. When he was young, he was hit by a coach. Even though he survived, sustained head trauma disabled him for life. So the boy was kept on chains in the coach room.

Local children would mock him because he would scream all day. He was eventually put away in an asylum after he was found chained to his mother’s bed. He died at the asylum, but still haunts the grounds of the homestead. Some people claim they can hear howling and hissing coming from the cottages.

The coach house is also haunted by a stable boy named Morris. One day he didn’t feel well and decided to stay in bed, but his master didn’t approve that, so he decided to teach him a lesson. He put the boy’s straw mattress on fire, thinking he would jump up and get to work. But Morris was too ill and couldn’t get up, so he died in his bed.

To this day, it’s said you can hear the dying screams from the boy coming from the old Carriage house.

A more recent ghost is the one of Jack Simpson, one of the home’s caretakers. In 1961, he was shot dead by a young man on the porch of the house. This man had been watching Alfred Hitchcock’s movie “Psycho” before committing the crime. The words “Die Jack, ha ha,” were carved into the shed door, where they can still be seen today.

When the Ryans bought the house in 1963, one foggy evening they saw light coming out from the house. But the house didn’t have any electricity back then. When they got closer, the lights turned off, and when they checked, there was no one there.

They tried to explain it, but over the years, the family noticed a lot of weird things. Their pets refused to enter the property and, one day, they found all of their chickens, pet parrot and kittens murdered.

Visitors of the Monte Cristo Homestead have reported a range of spine-tingling experiences like feeling a heavy presence in certain rooms, hearing unexplained noises or seeing ghostly figures. Some people even faint during tours.

The house has been featured on several paranormal television shows like Scream Test, Ghost Hunters International and My Ghost Story.

Monte Cristo Homestead: Australia’s Most Haunted House (1/2)

The Monte Cristo Homestead is said to be Australia´s most haunted house and the home to at least ten ghostly inhabitants. Despite its spooky reputation, it’s still one of the country’s most visited place since the Ryans opened it as a museum in the 90s.

Visitors have reported hearing footsteps, seeing apparitions, and feeling cold spots throughout the place. Some even claimed to have been touched or pushed by unseen forces.

The Monte Cristo Homestead is known for its many ghostly inhabitants, but there are a few rooms that are said to be particularly haunted.

The Blue Room, where the former owner died, is said to be the most haunted room. According to rumours, he died from a sudden blood poisoning because his starched collar infected a boil on his neck in 1910.

Also, his wife, Elizabeth is said to haunt the manor. She is often seen wearing her black lace dress, lace cap and a stand up beaded collar, walking through the halls, still treating the house as her own. It’s said she comes out from the little room she had converted into a chapel.

The Nursery is also said to be haunted by the ghost of Ethel, one of the Crawley’s children, who died when the nanny dropped her by accident down the stairs in 1917. Visitors have reported hearing the sound of a child crying and feeling a cold presence in the room.

There was also another young boy who fell down the stairs and died, but there isn’t much information about him.

The sound of children playing in the mansion’s halls have also been reported together with the flickering lights and sudden drops in temperature.

The Servant’s Quarters are also said to be haunted. Christopher Crawley is said to have gotten two of his maids pregnant. One of them committed suicide by jumping from the balcony. She was pregnant when she did it.

Visitors have reported hearing footsteps of a busy maid in the dead of night and some people claim to have seen the ghostly figure of a woman on the balcony. It’s said that you can still see the bleach stain from when they tried to remove all of the blood.

The tragic history of the Monte Cristo Homestead

In Junee, New South Wales, there’s the Monte Cristo Homestead. Even though its story is full of good fortune, the place is said to be Australia’s most haunted house.

It all started with Christopher William Crawley, a farmer who bought two parcels of land in the town Junee to build his family home.

The first few years, the family had financial problems and lived in a slab hut. But Christopher’s fortune changed in 1878, when the Great Southern Railway Line opened. He scraped all the money he could find together and bought a license to build the Railway Hotel right opposite to the railway station.

The village of Junee only consisted of Crawley’s hotel, the Railway Store and some scattered slab huts. The arrival of many travelers and agricultural trade benefited people like Crawley, who became very rich and, at some point, one of the towns founders. He was a generous man with a big sense of civic responsibility.

Before the construction of the new homestead, the Crawley family lived in a small brick cottage. In 1885, it was demolished and turned into a big stable for prized horses. The original space still exists but it was turned into the servant’s quarters.

The new home, a two-story house built in the Late Victorian Style, became an ultimate status symbol. Because it was built on a hill, it was overlooking the entire town.

Christopher Crawley died in his own house on December 14, 1910, from a combination of heart failure and blood poisoning. The latter was caused by a carbuncle on his neck that got infected.

His wife, Elizabeth, couldn’t cope with her husband’s death, so she locked herself inside the house’s attic, where she had built a small chapel. She died in 1933 due to a ruptured appendix.

The last member of the Crawley family left the house in 1948. After that, it remained empty for more than a decade.

Although there were several caretakers at the house, they couldn’t prevent the place from being vandalized.

In 1963, the house was bought by Reginald and Olive Ryan. They restored it and then turned it into a museum.

Reginald died in 2014, but his wife still stands strong. by @cursed.locations

The Sinister Legends of the Buda Labyrinth

The Buda Labyrinth is a naturally formed tunnel system that spans directly beneath the Buda Castle. The tunnel system has been used for many years as shelter and storage. But there have been tools and artifacts discovered in there that suggest it has even been used since ancient times.

The caves have also been used as a torture chamber, prison, dungeon and war-time shelter. Because of this, it’s believed that residual energy has been left behind, leading to paranormal occurrences.

There are many ghost stories about the Buda Labyrinth, related to several deaths experienced within its walls. Several female skeletons, dating back to the 15 or 1600s, were discovered inside the tunnel system. It was believed that the bodies had been disposed of in a well during a castle take-over.

Additional skeletons were found at one of the entrances. They were thought to belong to a Turkish Harem. Many people believe that could be the ghosts connected to these skeletons that haunt this place.

However, they aren’t the only ones thought to be responsible for the Labyrinth’s paranormal activity.

It’s rumored that Vlad Tepes or Vlad the Impaler, the real-life inspiration for Dracula, was imprisoned in there. After his release, he became the impaling and torturing monster for what he’s known for. Some people claim that his ghost resides within the tunnels too.

Another legend says that he died there and his body is buried in the Labyrinth, except for his head that’s buried somewhere else.

In the 19th century a ghost named the “Black Count” reportedly haunted the caves. It was the spirit of an impoverished count from the 1800s who was an ally of bandits, allowing them to hide in the labyrinth for money.

Today, one section of the Labyrinth is rumored to be the place where paranormal activity concentrates. There have been reports of disembodied voices, apparitions, screams and seeing Doppelgangers coming from this area.

In 2011, the place was suddenly raided and evacuated by Police, and it had to be closed for some time. Many speculate this was related to some unexplainable discovery made deep into the caverns of the Buda Labyrinth. by @cursed.locations

The Labyrinth of Buda Castle, Budapest

Beneath the streets and grand palaces of Buda Castle lies one of Budapest’s most fascinating attractions: the Budavári Labirintus (the Buda Labyrinth), a complex of natural caves that blend with man-made passageways carved over centuries.

They were made out of solid rock by rushing thermal waters long before prehistoric man used them as shelter more than half a million years ago. Archaeological evidence of 350,000-years-old stone tools belonging to Homo erectus were reportedly located in the caves.

The passages and chambers stretch out over 1,200 meters and are nearly 16 meters beneath the ancient castle district of what is now Budapest, Hungary.

It was the site of the ancient Roman city of Aquincum, settled right between Buda on the right bank of the Danube River, and Pest on the left bank. Pest was an important economic center, but in 1241 was devastated by the Mongol invasion.

In the following years, the Buda Castle was built by King Bela IV above the ancient chambers.

Early residents used the caves to storage food and water. But they were also used as shelter during war and fires.

The labyrinth later served as a prison and a torture chamber. One of the most chilling stories involves Vlad Tepes or Vlad the Impaler, later popularized as Dracula, who was betrayed by his ally, the Hungarian King Matthias, and imprisoned under the Castle of Buda around 1462.

It’s said that he was brutally tortured there, and later buried in the stone floor of the caves.

Over time, the caves were forgotten.

In the 1930s, they were rediscovered and investigated. Excavations discovered bones and objects; cellars were opened up, and a winding, maze-like path was revealed.

In 1980, the Labyrinth was renovated to give it a more cultural purpose. That same year, the first wax figure exhibition was installed.

Since its restoration, it has become one of Budapest’s most liked places. Strange figures, ancient art, symbols, wells and fountains, and stone humanoids can be found there.

In 1987, the place was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Silva Poetry House: A Sanctuary of Words in Bogotá

Silva Poetry House, located in the Candelaria neighborhood of Bogotá, Colombia, serves as a tribute to one of Colombia’s most beloved poets, José Asunción Silva. Once a residence, this museum has been transformed into a cultural center that not only celebrates Silva’s literary contributions but also provides a broader insight into Colombia’s rich poetic history.

José Asunción Silva is Colombia’s most famous poet, celebrated for his contributions to literature during a tumultuous life marked by personal and financial struggles.

Born into an affluent family, he exhibited extraordinary intellectual abilities from a young age, mastering multiple languages and composing poetry by the age of ten.

His early works, such as “Primera comunión” and “Crisálidas,” foreshadowed his literary talent, although many of his writings remained unpublished during his lifetime due to various responsibilities, including managing his family’s business.

Silva’s work was influenced by his travels to Europe, where he engaged with notable figures like Guy de Maupassant and Charles Baudelaire.

Despite his artistic goals, he faced economic and personal struggles, including the death of his father and sister, which deeply impacted his work, particularly his most famous poem, “Nocturno”.

All these tragedies led him to take his own life after a public reading in 1896, leaving behind a very important legacy.

The house where he used to live has been turned into a museum, opened on May 24, 1986 by Belisario Betancur. Its goal is to encourage the study, understanding and enjoyment of poetry of all times.

It has a library and a bookshop specializing in poetry, a music library, and an auditorium. It also has photographs of José Asunción Silva and some items that belonged to him, donated by his family.

It has hosted events like “Poetry has the word”, “The insurgent souls”, and “Rest in peace war”, where stakeholders meet for a poetry reading.

In 1995, the house was declared a national monument of Colombia.

Maria Mercedes Carranza was the director from 1986 to 2003, and the current director is the lawyer and writer Pedro Alejo Gomez. by @cursed.locations

The Spooky Past of Teacher’s Camp

The Baguio Teacher’s Camp serves as a training ground for educators. However, many people consider it to be one of the most haunted places in the Philippines.

it seems like the land on which the Teacher’s Camp was built could be responsible for the location’s hauntings.

Long before the camp was around, this very land was occupied by the Igorots, who are the indigenous people of the mountains in the Philippines. There are even rumors that a battle took place in this area long ago.

However, it’s believed that what happened there during World War II is what marked the location with troubled spirits. Between 1942 and 1945, Teacher’s Camp was turned into a military hospital where atrocities were perpetrated.

There are a number of spirits said to haunt the Teacher’s Camp, with some of them being especially terrifying.

Maybe the most famous one is a lady in White who has been seen walking all throughout the Teacher’s Camp, although no one really knows who she is or why she haunts the area.

Another spirit that has been seen around the camp is the one of a headless priest, a ghostly figure often spotted roaming corridors, whose origins remain a mystery but are linked to sadistic wartime rites.

One of the most feared spirit is the Love Sick Igorot, a native lore said to trail young women back to the dorms and watch over them while they sleep, a sinister combination of loneliness and fear.

But perhaps the scariest of all the ghosts that haunt Teacher’s Camp is the 3 AM Blood-Soaked Woman. Countless people who have spent the night at the camp have reported waking in their beds at 3 am only to find a blood-soaked woman watching over them. No one knows the origins of this lady, yet her appearance has disturbed many.

In addition to the encounters with these spirits, there have been reports of other paranormal experiencies. Guests hear screams in empty hallways, ghostly footsteps, and objects moving out of place. Others describe sleepwalking experiences or feelings of possession, especially in old cottages and near the abandoned oval.

Teacher’s Camp: an educational landmark

Located in the scenic hills of Baguio City, Teacher’s Camp stands as a significant landmark that combines history, education, and natural beauty.

Tracing back to its origin, “Teacher’s Camp,” sometimes referred to as Baguio Teacher’s Camp, was established in an area known as “O-ring-ao.”

The camp’s establishment was conceived through an ordinance by Benguet Governor William F. Pack on December 11, 1907. It was intended as a training center and vacation site for American teachers, known as “Thomasites,” and Filipino teachers.

The plan received enthusiastic approval from the American Colonial Government’s Secretary of Public Instruction, William Morgan Shuster, on January 18, 1908.

Teacher’s Camp was officially opened as a training center and vacation site for teachers and Insular government employees on April 6, 1908. The Baguio’s Teachers Assembly was its first activity.

Participants arrived from all over the country: American school teachers, school superintendents, other teachers and even Bureau of Education officials, who all slept in tents under pine trees.

Since then, the camp has undergone significant development with the establishment of various buildings such as a dining area called “Kursaal,” an athletic field and the Benitez Hall.

In 1937, the Philippine Military Academy occupied a large portion of the camp moving from its location at Camp Henry T. Allen to accommodate more cadet trainees. It was during that time that General Luna Hall was built.

The camp also played a significant role during World War II, from 1942 to 1945, serving as a hospital for Japanese occupants. It is said to have been the site of numerous beheadings and killings, which have fueled the ghost stories known today.

After World War II, the camp was repaired and reopened to the public in 1947, and the Military Academy was moved to its former location.

Today, it serves its original purpose by hosting conferences, training sessions, seminars, and workshops commonly conducted by the Department of Education employees, teachers, and students within the camp’s facilities.

Ann Starrett Mansion: the haunted Victorian house

In the city of Port Townsend in Washington, the place is known for its many old Victorian and historical buildings.

Built in 1889 by George Starrett for his wife Ann, it is said that even in their afterlife they spend their time in this Victorian mansion, known as the Ann Starrett Mansion.

For more than 20 years, the couple lived there with their only son Edwin, two servants and their nanny. It is said to have been a happy time for them. After they died, the Starrett family lived there for many generations, and many people claim that they never really left.

In 1986, the house was bought by Bob and Edil Sokol who use the place as a boutique hotel. Guests reported about a particular feeling while they were staying there. A haunting feeling for sure, but perhaps not of the spooky one.

There area few ghosts that have been spotted in the house over the years. The first one is a female ghost with red hair, believed to be Ann herself. It’s said to be a peaceful, welcoming spirit who likes to just enjoy the mansion, perhaps acting like a hostess to the living. She has been spotted more than once by the solar calendar that George built for her.

There also has been seen a man believed to be George Starrett. He is often seen accompanying the red haired ghost in the halls and down the stairs. Not much is reported about him, just that a male presence is sensed and he seems to be at peace.

The third ghost that has been seen is said to be the spirit of their son’s nanny. She is the only spirit that interacts with the staff and guests, especially in her old bedroom on the second floor. Described as an older, austere, dignified, but well-mannered woman with some gray hair. In her old bedroom, a mirror has shown a reflection of her.

Staff working late-nights have seen the shadow of a female form in Victorian attire glide up the stairs to the second floor.

Apparently, she turns lights off when the living leave a room and keeps an eye on guests. However, she creates an “atmosphere of displeasure” when the living break the house rules or act disrespectful. She has thumped some visitors on the head for verbal offenses. by @cursed.locations

Ann Starrett Mansion: a monument to love

The Ann Starrett Mansion is a beautiful Victorian-style home, located in the seaport town of Port Townsend, Washington.

It was built in 1889 by the contractor George Starrett for his wife, Ann, as a wedding gift. It was a monument made to express his love for her.

Starrett hired the New York artist George Chapman to design the interior. He created frescoes that intended to double as a solar calendar. The dormers were situated in such a way that on the first day of a new season, the sun shined through a window to a ruby-red glass in the center of the dome, which then reflects the sunbeam on the new season’s fresco.

The parlor and dining room ceilings have original murals that have required little retouching since their original installation.

The house also features a spiral staircase with two complete turns, which experts believe to be the last of its kind in America.

The mansion was also one of the first buildings on the west coast to have forced air heating.

George and Ann fully enjoyed their beautiful new abode, and lived there all their lives. Their son, Edward Morris Starrett, and his nanny also lived there. Throughout the years, descendants lived there as well, until they decided top ut it up for sale.

In 1896, Bob and Edil Sokol bought the mansion and turned it into a boutique and bed and breakfast hotel, adding bathrooms and fireplaces. They also added bedrooms and carefully restored the original wallpaper, art frieze and other projects throughout the mansion.

They also bought the home across the street and expanded their establishment, adding hot tubs to the rooms offered there.

In 2005, they temporarily closed the bed and breakfast. When they reopened, they had stopped serving breakfast, but still ran the place as a boutique hotel.

At some point, they needed to retire, so they put their property on the market and hired two people to take care of the business.

In 2017, Christian and Cima Andrews purchased the mansion for $775,000. Their plan was to use the building as a private residence.
