Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings wrote: I want to suggest that there is something that may be even more important than Black students having Black teachers and that is White students having Black teachers! It is important for White students to encounter Black people who are knowledgable and hold power and authority over them.”

This☝🏽is not a controversial statement, but a simple truth. And I would also add that all of us of every colour and Culture, including brown people like me, benefit from seeing our Black brothers and sisters in leadership and authority.

Grateful to @cbcbeingblackincanada for this documentary and so excited to see Ms. Patrice Hall @ms_p_hall (who will be gracing the stage at Stay Sensitized Conference 2026) being featured. I have seen firsthand how students and staff members (not just in her class but all over her school look up to her with respect and admiration). I’ve personally seen students of so many different backgrounds light up and receive an impartation of joy for learning.

Not too long ago a pre-teaching candidate commented to me on how blessed she feels to see this seasoned educator “do her thing” with students as young as kindergarten but all the way up to professional development for faculty.

A true leader of leaders who I personally believe will impact the country with her educational expertise and heart to make communities, sweeter, safer and stronger.

Salute 🫡 and big respect Ms. HaLL! @ottcatholicsb @ocsb_ben @ocsbequity @ocsbntip @catholic_teachers you’re very fortunate to have her leadership inside and outside the classroom. Just sayin :).

Last week, the School of Social Work came together for Black History Is Every Month: Joy in Every Step — an evening celebrating the legacy, creativity, and leadership of African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) communities.
Through music, poetry, art, and meaningful conversation, the event centered joy as both a legacy and a path forward.

On behalf of the School of Social Work’s Black History Committee, we would like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who attended Black History is Every Month: Joy in Every Step on Wednesday, March 11th. All attendees who joined us from near and far, demonstrating the strength of our collective community and the importance of continuing to celebrate Black history, culture, and excellence together.

Despite the weather, we were grateful to see so many people come out and join us for such a meaningful evening of community, celebration, and reflection. It was truly refreshing to witness everyone connecting, enjoying each other’s company, and engaging with the performers, presenters, and the wonderful food. The evening surpassed our expectations because of your presence, energy, and support.

We would like to extend our appreciation to our incredible performers, keynote, panelists, moderator, host and guest speakers who shared their talents, insights, and voices with us. Your contributions brought depth, inspiration, and joy to the evening.

We would also like to take a moment to acknowledge the Black History Committee team and volunteers, whose dedication and hard work helped make the event such a success. Their commitment behind the scenes ensured that the evening was welcoming, vibrant, and memorable for everyone. Please see the attached photo to meet the amazing team.

✨ Today is the BIG day! ✨

We are excited to introduce the host of tonight’s Black History is Every Month: Joy in Every Step event, Professor Nana aba Duncan.

Nana aba is an Associate Professor and the inaugural Carty Chair in Journalism, Diversity and Inclusion at Carleton University’s School of Journalism. She is also the Director of the Mary Ann Shadd Cary Centre for Journalism and Belonging, a research centre dedicated to advancing inclusive, belonging-focused journalism in Canada.

The Centre’s first major project, Reporting in Black Communities, is the first Canadian guidebook to combine perspectives from Black news consumers, Black journalists, and newsroom leaders to help journalists report on Black communities with accuracy, dignity, and equity.

Nana aba is also the co-founder of Media Girlfriends, a production company led by journalists of colour. Prior to joining Carleton, she spent 15 years at CBC Radio as a host and producer, most recently hosting Fresh Air, Ontario’s top-rated weekend morning show.

Geraldine Ernest is a Bachelor of Social Work student at Carleton University and serves as the Vice President of Events for the Bachelor of Social Work Student Society (BSWSS). She is passionate about community engagement, leadership, and creating spaces that encourage meaningful conversations around social impact and empowerment. Geraldine is also the 2026 recipient of the Leading Ladies of Canada Youth Impact and Advocacy Award, recognizing her commitment to uplifting youth voices and community leadership.
