🙏 Still pinching ourselves and so grateful that we got the opportunity to design this indoor/outdoor gathering place project, coming to a nearby southern city in our neighbor state soon! After 3 years of hard work and humbling learning experiences, @union.studios is a regional design firm! Available for dreamy coastal/nature/eco resort/retreat design (gotta name our dreams to make them come true!) in 2021 and beyond...

5 YEARS @union.studios // WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH THE NEXT 5 YEARS?

I went out on my own as Union Studios five years ago, this time of year. It was right after Halloween when I blubbered through tears telling my awesome boss Nick Marshall @chasemarshallarchitects , who I love dearly, that it was time for me to try this on my own.

I didn’t know exactly what I would be making here, but I thought it might be more than one thing, so I decided to call it “Studios” with an “s” instead of “Studio.”

The truth is, I still don’t know.

What I’m beginning to see after five years designing and making all kinds of spaces as Union Studios (and more than twenty years since I chose creating as a life path, when I moved from California back to the south for an MFA in Creative Writing @ua_creativewriting at 23), is that running a business and living a creative life are less about knowing anything for sure and more about being willing to be okay with NOT knowing—okay with feeling afraid, uncertain, lost, and confused—a lot or maybe even most of the time. It’s mostly a lot of really not knowing how things will turn out, or if they will turn out at all.

And then, every once in awhile, there is a moment where everything comes together, after all. And then, it’s time to move on, to create the next thing. My next projects may be on water @float_modernhouseboats 🌅 and in words 💻📖 instead of on solid ground, or—I may pack it all in 📦✏️📐 and create something else, entirely. 🤷‍♀️🌌 But, I’m okay with the not knowing, and I invite you to be okay with yours, too. If you’re willing to try things without knowing how they will turn out, they just might turn out better than you could have dreamed, 5 years from now. 🔮
