The Beauty and Diversity of Peru’s Oceans 🪸🌊

Peace Boat is now sailing from Panama to Peru, which is often associated with mountainous nature, such as the UNESCO World Heritage site of Machu Picchu and the Andes Mountains. However, its coastline stretches for about 2,500 km, hosting a rich marine ecosystem that is perhaps less well known. In a lecture by Daniel Cáceres Bartra, Guest Educator and marine biologist from Peru, we learned about the beauty of Peru’s oceans, the ecosystems they support, and the current threats facing these vibrant marine environments. 🌊🌴

In 2023, Daniel was a “Youth for the SDGs” scholar for the UN Ocean Decade and is now leading the SOA Latin American network of youth leaders making a positive difference for our ocean. We are looking forward to having him join us onboard again soon! 🐬🐠

Do you know what day it is? It's #DeepSeabedDay 🙌

🪸 Time to celebrate a wondrous dark world teeming with life, most of which doesn’t have a name yet! 🪱🦈

Scientific study of these ecosystems matters a lot because, whether it’s sharks or starfish, we simply can’t protect what we can’t name.

💙 That’s why we advocate for making choices guided by strong science, precaution, and the protection of this vital marine environment.

Thanks for joining us on board again, Daniel!

We welcomed Daniel Cáceres back to Peace Boat as he joined us on our Global voyage from New York to Panama!

A Youth for the SDGs alumni, marine biologist, and returning Peace Boat guest educator, Daniel is a passionate ocean advocate who has dedicated his work to marine conservation and raising awareness about the importance of protecting our ocean through Sustainable Ocean Alliance.

💙 During this journey, Daniel shared his experience and insights with our onboard community, inspiring conversations about ocean protection and advancing SDG 14: Life Below Water. See the photos from his voyages as a Youth for the SDGs scholar for the United Nations Ocean Decade and his recent talks for our “Sailing for the SDGs” program onboard in New York City.

We were so happy to have you sail with us one more time, Daniel! 🌎

Here at the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), I’ve noticed something that deserves much more attention.

We often use the word “protection” to describe two very different approaches:

1.Preventive protection: Protecting ecosystems from threats that may arise in the future.

2. Threat-reducing protection: Reducing or eliminating the pressures already driving biodiversity loss today.

Both matter. But they are NOT the same.

We can establish millions of hectares of protected areas in places with little human activity, preventing potential future threats, while doing little to address the fishing pressure, habitat destruction, and other threats already affecting biodiversity elsewhere.

And here’s the problem: It’s often easier to protect areas where little is happening than to confront the activities already causing ecological damage.

That’s why the implementation of global 30x30 targets in countries must go beyond expanding protected area coverage. We need to measure how many threats we are preventing, and overall how many existing pressures we are ACTUALLY reducing, to know what ecological outcomes we are achieving.

Because stopping what’s destroying, or damaging ecosystems today it today is just as urgent. 🌊🌿 thank you @barranquilla20 for hosting this amazing panel
