Hi friends (and frienemies) 👋🏽 Life has been BUSY as of late and I hardly post on this thing, except to amplify the people and things I care about ( ie. free Palestine, fighting MAGA bullshit, etc). But in the spirit of a new year, here are a few updates in my life:

I turned 40 last November. This doesn’t really change anything for me except that I had some life goals I wanted to and I am working on them!

I also moved back to North Beacon Hill. This is a Seattle neighborhood that I was lucky enough to land in when I first moved here… four years ago 😅. I consider myself lucky to have been able to move back. I’ve got a library around the corner, a grocery store within walking distance, easy access to the light rail, downtown, @tabletopvillagellc for casual Pokémon games and @trainathleticform for great workouts and vibes🏋🏽📚🚃🌃

For those who don’t know, I very recently became a father! I am very uneasy about the state of our tech oligarchy and haven’t really had a desire to post any pictures or info about this kid on here. But rest assured they are real! And I am having a blast leaning into fatherhood and learning about this new human. Even if it means sleepless nights and hazy days 😴

Anyway, I am both angry and optimistic about the state of the world, and I am not sure how long I will stay on this platform. Or Facebook, which I have been on since 2003 or so. Over the years, I’ve found it was a useful way to drive social change and meet new and interesting people. But I’m pretty sad about what this has become in the era of Trump and fascism. So maybe I will just take a small step back and decide on some new boundaries for this platform.

Anyway, I hope you all are well and staying safe. Fuck these ICE raids. Fuck this pause on Federal aid. Fuck Trump and Elon. And if you supported these assholes, we probably aren’t friends anyway. ✌🏽 by @danielryne

Proudest moment.

Watching @danielryne show up, stay consistent, and really earn it… that’s what it’s about. No shortcuts, no noise, just work.

This one meant a lot 💙 by @danielryne

Had an awesome time at the HOC Urban Crabbing event yesterday! Great turnout, tons of learning, and a delicious crab boil to wrap it all up. Huge thanks to @scaly_eyes, @malcolmlegit and @danielryne for putting together such a solid event, y’all crushed it!

Big thank you to everyone who came out and made it such a good time. Can’t wait for the next one!

2025 Turkey season has ended here in WA but a few weeks back we had our annual @huntersofcolor Spring Turkey camp. All participants got to learn, see, chase, hear and taste wild turkey over the course of a weekend. Thank you to our partners Lazy R Ranch / @rhizomes.not.rhinestones @thenewcowgirlcamp
for the amazing hospitality and land access.

Thank you to all the mentees, mentors and volunteers that made this and events like it possible by showing up! Cannot wait for the next camp. If you don't want to miss out hit the link in my bio to join one of our communities W/ Hunters of color 👊🏾

CW: Death

It's only been one week since you passed and yet you're already looking after us and keeping our family safe. Thank you, Grandpa 🙏🏽

This is mi abuelo, Armando Lucio Jr. Most folks called him Mando. Where I grew up, the Rio Grande Valley, he was a bit of a legend. His family (our family) was dirt poor. But he was able to go to a private Catholic school on a sports scholarship because he was an incredibly gifted athlete. Upon graduation he served in the U.S. Army, traveling overseas before returning back home to South Texas. And when he came back home he became a firefighter, then a fire chief and eventually our county fire marshall. He even taught the Texas A&M Fire Academy 🚒 🔥

In many ways, he was a true Texas everyman. He loved BBQs and barbacoa. He would often cook for the family on Sundays or at the fire station he was at. He loved coaching and watching sports, and especially loved the Cowboys 🤠 🏈 He loved hunting and sharing his love of the outdoors with his family 🦌 And boy howdy that man loved a beer 🍺

He loved to sing Vicente Fernandez songs to my Grandmother. And until very recently he still took her to dance on the weekends 💃🏽🕺🏽Today would have been his 66th wedding anniversary to my grandmother, Regina, his reina 👑 I know he's still spending time with her, even now.

Above all he was a family man that cared deeply about his community. People often looked to him for support or solutions when they needed help, and my grandfather almost always obliged.

He was not without his faults either. He could be stubborn and he was definitely a stern father and grandfather. Though I think he softened up a bit by the time I was born. Check out pic number 2 to see how happy he was when I was born. And yes that's me wearing a UT onesie on my grandfather's lap 🐂🤟🏽

In the end he gave much more than took in this life, and that's a hard thing to do. He leaves a legacy I don't think I'll ever be able to love up to, but it's certainly set some goal posts for me to shoot for.

Thank you grandpa. I miss you and will see you soon. 💔 by @danielryne

Last week wrapped up an amazing spring turkey season with @huntersofcolor here in Washington 🦃 I'm always blown away by the tenacity of new hunters, and impressed by the mentors who step up to match that energy year over year. More importantly, I'm so eternally grateful for this community. Every single person who comes to an HOC event brings a new perspective that helps us grow as an organization, and ultimately benefits the wider community. If you joined us this spring, thank you 🙏🏽 ✨

I'm especially thankful to our Washington ambassador @malcolmlegit who organized an array of workshops and programs this spring, while holding down a new job and preparing to welcome a new baby (hi Liana 👋🏽🐣). You're truly the GOAT 🐐

And to @modocbows who joined us to host an archery workshop and get people reconnected with these hunting ways before our season kicked off 🏹 He traveled up to Washington with his partner @honey.medicine while they were also preparing to welcome a new baby 🐣👋🏽

And to @rhizomes.not.rhinestones and @sundogsheepcompany for being such amazing hosts and welcoming us out at Lazy R Ranch 🐄 🤠 Beth, your kindness and openness with your land makes such a huge difference for our mentees. Alex, your mentorship and guidance means the world to us. I'm already looking forward to the next time I can hear y'all carry a tune around a camp fire 🔥

And to @scaly_eyes for taking so many folks under your wing (pun intended) and helping them get started.

And to my other Washington board members @matopena and @j_teeters who are helping to guide this ship as best we can ⛵ Jonathan also welcomed a new born this season (hi Kai 👋🏽). All these babies around me feel like a sign from the universe 👀🔮

Anyway, here are a few pics from the spring:

2. @betterdayswest interviewing @kimagureya_
3. @matopena staring down a decoy
4. Early morning hike with @brianphotoh
5. Saying hi to Mia, the newest hunter over at @humannaturehunting. Oh and to Bruce and Sarah 😅👋🏽
6. Huge batch of morels recovered while hunting!
7. Campfire songs with Beth and Alex

Aurora Borealis appreciation post ✨🌈

The first time I saw the Northern Lights was in 2023 on a trip to Fairbanks, Alaska. Growing up in Texas, I honestly doubted that I'd ever see them. It sounds like such a magical phenomenon, but one that requires traveling to places I wasn't sure I'd ever visit.

But as I've gotten older and watched many bucket list items go unchecked, I've pushed myself to try and reach a few. This one seemed more obtainable than others. So I took a last minute trip to northern Alaska in early January, where it was -30° F at night 🥶 The lights were amazing to behold and I really didn't want to leave because I never thought I'd see them again...But I was so wrong.

While not as prominent as the lights I saw in Alaska (the last picture in this set), this past weekend you could see them with the naked eye from here in Seattle. If you stayed up and got to a dark part of the city (near the Sound is pretty good), you could see them dancing in the sky ✨🌈✨🌈✨

It was even more magical because so many people could see them at the same time around the globe 🌎 Truly felt like a moment of unified humanity in an otherwise chaotic time.

I hope you got to see it and feel it ❤️ And if not, just know that there will always be another ✨

TLDR: Please consider making a small donation to @huntersofcolor for #givingtuesday 🦅 We're focused on cultivating equitable opportunities in hunting and conservation for Black, Indigenous and other people of color, but we need your support to do it.

Link to donate in my bio ✨ And if you're already a member, ally or donor - thank you 🙏🏽 We literally could not do this work without you.

Words can't capture how grateful I am to have this organization in my life. But I'm going to try, so bear with me (no pun intended 🐻).

Truth be told, I've been sitting on this post since Thanksgiving 🦃. I wanted to give thanks to the people who are putting in the work to help Black, Indigenous and other communities of color reconnect with lifeways that have provided food and culture since time immemorial. So instead of the "Thanksgiving" post on a day observing the colonial version of the holiday, I'm giving thanks today and also asking for your support of this organization.

Thank you @lydiaparker123, @jflatt18 and @thomas_tyner for founding this organization. And especially to Lydia and Jimmy who put their entire hearts and lives into this org every day ❤️

Thank you @gabriela.zaldumbide, @modocbows, and @anna_venturing for your time, work and patience with HOC. You've helped us more than you know and I'm in constant awe of how you continue carrying the ethos of HOC in your own lives and careers.

Thank you @iam_jbaum for jumping into the fray at a time when we needed the support.

Thank you to @crystalegli @kamkam520 @thewilltohunt @astronautmanju and @notm2ht for your leadership on the Board and helping us get this organization off the ground. And big thanks to @matopena and @j_teeters who recently joined our Board will be helping us in the coming years.

And most importantly - THANK YOU 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 to all the Ambassadors, Mentors, Mentees, and new hunters who have organized or attended HOC events, trusted us with their lives (literally), and helped us grow as an organization. You continue to inspire me to be a better person and a better hunter.

If we haven't already, I truly hope we can hunt alongside one another some day. See you in the field🦌💚 by @danielryne

I’m definitely biased, but…you never need a reason to treat yo’self to being photographed. 💯

Not convinced? Fine. If you’re looking for one anyway, your birthday is the perfect excuse. 🥳

My friend @danielryne told me that he was inspired to book a birthday portrait session after seeing the self-portraits I took for mine back in September. I was absolutely honored (and super stoked) that he chose to work with me. Being in front of the camera can feel quite vulnerable, and I never take it for granted that people trust me to take care of them! 🫶

A birthday portrait session allows you to not only reflect on your past year, but to embrace (and, let’s be real, SHOW OFF) your friggin’ awesomeness at [insert fabulous age here]. 😉 Plus, they are incredibly fun. 💃🏼

So, my friend, gather your favorite outfits, I’ll find a location that fits your vibe, and let’s create a portrait session that truly embodies your unique personality and style as you take another trip around the sun. 😎

What would the vibe be for YOUR birthday portrait session? 📸

🧁 39

Another year around the sun ☀️ Another year to reflect on the privileges of my life, the friends I've met, the mistakes I've made. And if I'm lucky, another year ahead to make a few more.

Everything in the world feels heavy right now, especially for Palestinians in and outside of Gaza who have been fighting for liberation for decades. As someone who's worked in social justice for the better part of my life, it's easy to recognize acts of injustice and colonization, but it's rarely as pronounced as it is now.

I've been quiet about this topic. Not because I don't care. I care, immensely. But because of the anger that rises in me when I focus on these issues (and what that anger does to my health and soul), and because we should be centering our attention on those impacted by this genocide, and supporting them in their fight for liberation. With that in mind, please humor me and consider doing one these things for my birthday 🎂

1. Donate to @thepcrf - Until the recent blockade, the PCRF was providing urgent food and medical relief to people in Gaza.

2. Follow/take action w @mecaforpeace - Along with providing on the ground relief efforts, MECA has been organizing and amplifying actions you can take. Check them out at https://bit.ly/stopgazagenocide

3. Follow/take action w @uscpr to find collective actions to take in your communities.

THANK YOU, sincerely, if you choose to take action or support these efforts.

And if you've done all that and still want to help me celebrate my birthday, send me your favorite poem or poet 📜🖋 Over the past couple of years I've reading a lot more and writing down some my favorite poems, songs, letters and books. I won't give the full list, but here is one that's been on my mind this year:

“Our radical imagination is a tool for decolonization, for reclaiming our right to shape our lived reality.” - @adriennemareebrown ✨

Last thing: I finally took up an offer by my friend @thetarabrown to do a photography session 📸 If you think these turned out nice, it's mostly because she is extremely talented and less because I look good in twill or black. Thanks Tara 🙏🏽 by @danielryne
