There is a lyrebird that occasionally visits and sings in the dense understory behind my home. It is not its masterful mimicry that alerts me to its presence but the sound that is uniquely its own. Notes that don't fall within the familiar, the regular rhythm of wattlebird and rosella, fantail and honeyeater, currawong and crow, scrubwren and spinebill, kookaburra and king parrot, cockatoo and corella, pardalote and parrot, blackbird and cuckoo. I have yet to see it but there is comfort in knowing that it returns eventhough the intense building of a water treatment plant has been underway for a year.
On the window sill has sat a lyrebird held in time. It is as old as me. The little Australian pottery dish, beautifully handpainted by Neil Douglas back in the 50's in collaboration with potter Arthur Boyd, masters both, is now joining the collection of a fellow admirer interstate. I am spring cleaning and can content myself with hearing my occasional vocal visitor. #arthurmerricboyd #neildouglas #lettinggo #backyardbirdcount by @danutaephemeralart
