Most of what we hear about planetary risk comes as numbers and headlines. We can take them in yet still feel very little. On 28 October at Medulla in Berlin, we’re trying something slower, and lying down to listen. Seeding Optionality Session 2 uses sound made for the Planetary Compendium, ten case studies on planetary governance by the Berggruen Institute and Dark Matter Labs. Sound design by Meera Shenoy (@meerkheer) and Nithin Shamsudhin (@nithinshams). Doors at 18:30, and we start at 19:00. We’d love to see you there: https://luma.com/dyr6sdgn (link also in bio) by @darkmatter_labs
A small snippet from my conversation with @siddhiashar on futures thinking and the art of noticing signals 🧚 Siddhi thinks of signals as pixels: small observations, emerging ideas and everyday conversations that, when pieced together, reveal different possibilities for the future. What I particularly love is the idea of looking for hopeful pixels, those little glimpses of futures already taking shape around us, and imagining what they might look like at scale, across different scenarios. We explore how this way of thinking connects to climate, food and technology futures in the episode, “Siddhi Ashar on Collective Intelligence in an Uncertain World.” Now streaming on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube. Tune in!🤝 [climate technology, food futures, signals, pixels, podcast, forum of the future] by @darkmatter_labs
Traveler, there is no path. The path is made by walking 𝙩𝙤𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧. We had the pleasure of joining the Spanish impact investing ecosystem at SpainNAB’s annual event, Camino al Impacto (Path to impact), where Indy Johar challenged us to look risk in the eye and act accordingly and 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆. Not in the decades ahead, now. We are seeing how, as the value at risk becomes more tangible, the cost of inaction rises, and the perceived risk of taking action decreases. This is opening a window of opportunity to act boldly and decisively, collective and coherently to keep our futures open. At Dark Matter Labs, we are building and testing the conditions, infrastructures, and institutions needed to make this possible, together with actors from the private sector, public administrations, and civil society. And today, we are taking another step forward with the launch of the 𝗠𝗔𝗗𝗥𝗜𝗗𝟮𝟬𝟱𝟬° website, a DML initiative powered by xCO to codify and implement new systems of governance and collective intelligence, financial agreements, and accountability models to enable scale- and speed-appropriate multi-actor responses to systemic challenges. We are starting in Madrid, a city where the impacts of extreme heat increasingly cascade through urban systems, putting its future vitality and prosperity at risk. 👉 https://madrid2050degrees.com/ (also in bio) If you are working across investment, government, business, research, or civil society on how to prepare our cities for the risks ahead, we want to hear from you. Let’s build together the capabilities, partnerships, and infrastructures this transition requires. VII #CaminoalImpacto #SpainNAB #InversióndeImpacto by @darkmatter_labs

A full house at Medulla for investing in civic infrastructure. Exploring the question: what keeps civic technology running once the first funding ends? Keynote from Indy Johar. A live demo of Civic Ledger by Fang, Eunji and Koo, worked through a Berlin case: a club floor empty around 60 hours a week, and a youth theatre with nowhere to rehearse. Then a roundtable where people came with their insights and objections. Civic Ledger is built by Dark Matter Labs, tested across more than 40 spaces in South Korea. More on the project: civicledger.city Medulla, Dresdener Str. 113B. Open to people building things like this, reach out to us. #medulla #berlin #civictech #publicinteresttech by @darkmatter_labs

We have been awarded an Honorary Mention at Prix Ars Electronica 2026, Digital Humanity category, for The Planetary Compendium. We are more than happy to receive this award! We spent a year on one question: how do you narrate, visualise, represent, observe, and immerse in the planetary? The planetary means different things to different humans, and even more to non-human entities. It exceeds every frame you try to put around it. We added an asterisk to our ambitions early on, because we wanted to be honest about the limits of time, human ability, and what is really possible within a digital format. Our answer was not to simplify, we used friction as a way to induce learning. We tried to give agency to the stakeholders of the sea, the water, sand, air, mountains and more. We built two modes of experiencing the same content as a plurality of visions. We made something expanded and plural on purpose. Jury statement: “The Planetary Compendium is an evolving, multi-sensory intellectual tool created to reimagine planetary governance [...] The jury sees in it a scalable educational tool that can engage students in investigating systemic changes in finance, culture, technology, and policy needed to address the entangled crises of our time.” Berggruen Institute and Dark Matter Labs made this possible, bringing together research, governance, and design to create the conditions for something genuinely cross-disciplinary to exist. Prateek Shankar and Alexandra Bekker curated the intellectual backbone of the entire Compendium. Andrea Zaccuri, Francesco Castrovilli, Alessandro Miracapillo and Gurden Batra developed something we honestly did not know was possible at the start, and did it with care all with the care of the curatorial and operational management by Liam Charles Cohen. Thanks to all the team that worked with us on this wonderful project. Full credits in the comments. You can check it out on governtheplanet.org by @darkmatter_labs
Outcomes and Learnings from the Mumbai Citizen Risk Clinic On 28 March 2026, we ran the first Mumbai Citizen Risk Clinic, a 2.5-hour participatory workshop built on the premise that citizens already function as a distributed risk sensing infrastructure for their city, continuously detecting weak signals and adapting under stress. We wanted to see if that knowledge could be surfaced, organised, and made legible enough to act on. We built the pilot clinic around Mumbai’s extraordinary 2025-26 climate year, a heatwave and flood cycle that pushed the city’s systems to breaking point. This was on the basis that these are the conditions under which the city’s systemic failures become most legible to its local residents across class, caste, gender, infrastructure, and labour. We were joined by over a dozen organisations working directly with Mumbai’s residents, gig workers, and community groups, using tools from across our RiskSense portfolio to trace how people actually navigate systemic risk in their day to day lives. This is a small pilot, one clinic, one city, and we’re not claiming it’s representative of anything beyond the people in that room. But what came out of it was still enough to upend our own premise. We discovered that risk in Mumbai is first experienced as interrupted access to water, food, rest, and dignity, shaped as much by loan structures, rental enforcement, and the language of governance as by any single weather event. And what determines whether someone can absorb the next bad week is their ability to rest, to recover from the last one – something hard to find in a city that never sleeps. The clinic format itself is open for anyone to use. Every instrument, the clinic structure, the mapping tools, the templates, is free to download from the site, and can be viewed alongside the full synthesis. Strategic Architecture: How to Map Complexity for Action Join us for a lecture by Ivana Stancic of Dark Matter Labs on how to use systems mapping as a design practice - moving beyond describing complexity toward coordinating the collective action needed to transform the built environment. 🎟️ Tickets: 30 DKK (Free for CAFx Community Members) 🔗 Via link in bio About the Evening School 💫 Architecture has always been less a sovereign art than a gathering of itinerant techniques: the survey drafted for empire, the map drawn for taxation, the diagram lifted from cosmology, the projection honed in the painter’s studio, assembled for a time in the service of building. Yet, in the past decade, these instruments have begun to drift once more, resurfacing as evidentiary devices in courts and media (forensic architecture), as diagrammatic engines in ministries and agencies (strategic architecture), and as speculative projections in galleries and laboratories (speculative architecture), no longer tethered to construction but redirected toward truth, action and imagination. From August onwards CAFx’ evening school follows that migration in its strategic inflection, asking what becomes of architecture when the diagram ceases to prefigure form and instead structures deliberation, negotiates trade-offs, and scripts the conditions under which collective decisions are made. by @darkmatter_labs

What does it take to turn a city’s climate vision into something people can actually act on? Together with @lundskommun and supported by @netzerocitieseu we brought together 50+ people from across Lund Municipality to build six climate scenarios for 2035, and then tested what it would take to move them from imagination into delivery. We wrote about the methodology and what we learned on Medium. Link in bio. The scenarios are now on exhibition at Lund City Library from June 15th, with more locations to come.
