We booked a private boat tour with Captain Ivan and got to see some really cool spots around the Elaphiti islands. Centuries of maritime navigation is evident in these skipper’s ability to pull into spots and quickly load and unload passengers. I think it’s in their DNA. It was like air traffic control, but nobody is in control, and somehow it works flawlessly. We got into a number of caves that were tightly tucked between crevices and only accessible by diving under giant boulders. Some of them were pitch black, except for the light shining underwater through the cave opening to the sea. Swells would come in and change the air pressure and create dragon like groans as the water moved back out. Imagination runs wild. It was the coolest. Perfect day of swim adventure and chill on the water. We learned some history, took in amazing views, talked about the importance of family and heard what it was like to be a young boy during the siege of the Dubrovnik in the early 90s. If you’re traveling to Dubrovnik and would like a personalized boat excursion experience, Ivan is your guy @dubrovnikboatsolitudo by @das.brobst
Custom copper cuff gifted to me by my boys for Father’s Day. Nelms at Nelms Creekmur Forge hammers and twists all manner of metals into fire boxes, pokers, and substantial cuff bracelets. I chose copper and had J and E stamped on one end so I can always see my sons initials. And das.brobst stamped on the inside cause it’s just cool. Truly a unique piece and I’m stoked to wear it. If you’re looking for interesting custom designs, check out Nelms’ studio, full of rad tools, heavy metals, books, art, and motorcycles. It’s a scene. Buy local. Create family heirlooms. @nelmscreekmur by @das.brobst
Walking the city walls of Dubrovnik is photographic nirvana. Lines, colors, angles, depth, and street scenes that have been telling stories for over 1300 years. I recognize that looking at someone else’s vacation pics can be a snooze. These are my love letters to Croatia 🇭🇷 Oh, and Tracy is working on her influencer poses 😉 Tell me what pics you like! #dubrovnik #croatia by @das.brobst
First full day in Dubrovnik. The sunrise on Old Town from our Airbnb balcony was beyond expectations. We had stopped at the market the day before so we could cook breakfast and enjoy the early morning views. Then we walked into town to join a kayak tour around the city walls and a big cave beach. The water here is so unbelievably clear, easily 50 feet visibility. Kinda reminds me of Flathead Lake. Post kayaking, had some lunch in old town, did some cliff jumping at Buža Bar and then took a ferry to Lokrum Island, which turned out to be unexpectedly very cool. The island is full of free roaming peacocks, a landlocked salt water lake, a long coastline of rocky cliff jumping spots, and a monastery with a room holding the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones. Back to old town for a lovely dinner, then sunset in the hot tub on our balcony. I know, so boujee, but somebody’s got to do it. (we count our blessings every day) by @das.brobst
Little over 2 hour drive from Split to Mali Ston. Couple of scenic pull overs with charcuterie (and cappuccino) while we took in the views. The main attraction this day was a short oyster farm and tasting tour with Bota Sare. The oysters were great, but it was the mussels that stole the show in a garlic and butter broth. The old town of Ston has over 4 miles of defensive walls that are straight uphill in some sections. After grappa, wine, and a pile of oysters and mussels, we were too gassed to hike, instead admiring the views from the town. Next stop, Dubrovnik, with an afternoon Airbnb checkin. We strolled old town, had some dinner and ended the night with moonlit views of the Adriatic from the cliffs at Buža Bar. #botasare #dubrovnick #buzabar #croatia by @das.brobst
Jet lagged and running on cappuccino, I got up with the sunrise to take some proper photos of Diocletian’s Palace in old town Split. Built around 300 AD, the palace was Roman Emperor Diocletian’s retirement home. We had toured it the day before and learned all the facts, but to see it in the morning light, without any people, was meditative experience. 1700 years of everyone who has ever lived or been there seeing the same stone walls warm up with the sun. Just wow. #diocletianspalace by @das.brobst
Made our way to Split and settled in with some Dalmatian cuisine. Chartered a boat the next day and headed for Blue Lagoon and a couple of bays on the island of Šolta. Our lunch reservation was called into Restoran Turanj by the skipper where Emmett and I shared a fresh catch (how did I not get a pic of that?). More swimming post lunch, then back to Split for gelato. Slumming in the Adriatic Sea is alright with me. #croatia by @das.brobst
First leg of our Croatia trip… We drove from Zagreb to Slunj and visited the waterfalls and mills of Rastoke. We stayed overnight in the beautiful countryside of Selište Drežničko, where our Airbnb host baked us fresh banana bread muffins. I spied an apiary next door and, of course, had to talk bees and got to sample some fresh honey. Sunrise the next morning, we were off to Plitvice Lakes National Park, nestled in the Mala Kapela and Lička Plješivica mountain ranges. Spectacular views of crystal clear turquoise lakes and waterfalls all along the 4 hour hike. Had some rain and rolling thunder echoing through the canyon, adding to the sense that nature is way bigger than we are. by @das.brobst
Got invited to a lake house. Gracious host says, “we have wakeboards, surfboards, hydrofoils, kneeboards, you name it”. I see an O’Brien (iykyk) sitting lonely in the corner of the gear room, knock the spiders out of it and say, “I’ll ride this one”. The college crew says, “what is THAT?” “It’s a slalom ski” Perplexed, “You ride just one?” “Yeah, man, lemme show you” by @das.brobst
