Sand dunes at Meijindel, site of mass executions of Dutch resistance fighters in WWII. 7-8. Antwerp just casually has architecture that puts the rest of the region to shame 9. (Southwestern) Iceland MacFarquhar Christmas 2025 Unexpectedly mild, wet and very grey weather, beautiful nonetheless. Grateful to have been able to spend Christmas with family, even if I have none in Iceland anymore (also happy birthday Mom) by @davidhalldorjames
La Suisse pt. II Lausanne + hiking through and around Orbe 12.26 Very grateful to have been able to experience (a small corner) of the country for a month more as a resident than as a tourist. A trilingual society united by dislike for the borderingcountries that share their languages. Vibrant political engagement (at least six different political I saw set up booths at every weekly farmers market I went to). An economy consisting largely of bankers and people selling expensive things to bankers! But that is also perfectly happy having its major grocery stores and gas stations run as a cooperative, with well-used public transit running through every small village. Hillsides littered with old bunkers in case military non-alignment ever went south. Definitely not the most punk country in Europe, but a unique piece of the puzzle, nice to tie it all together after seeing the German and Italian sides a few years ago. by @davidhalldorjames
Suisse pt. I 12.26 A day in the life during my farmer's market mushroom salesman era chez @floydfungi.ch by @davidhalldorjames
Majorca pt. IV - Barcelona pt. II - Lyon 11.2025 1. Military towers built in WWII as triangulation points to guide submarines in the event of an Allied invasion 2. Bronze-age stone tombs at the Necropolis de Son Réal, built from 700-200 BCE by Talaiotic peoples (ending with the arrival of the Punic wars in the Balearic islands) 4-7. Catalàn culture (friends + walks + wine festivals) 8, 9. Lyon at night by @davidhalldorjames
Spain IV Majorca III The last leg of the GR222 is still under construction, so the 20km from Port de Pollenca to the northernmost point on the island at Cap de Formentor is better done as a there-and-back bike ride which turned out to damage my knees far more than the 150km of hiking did. Go figure. by @davidhalldorjames
Spain pt. III Majorca pt. II Soller - Refugio Tossals Verdes - Lluc - Pollenca Fewer olive groves, more interior hiking as the northeast coast becomes very cliff like. Hillsides scattered with remains of huts (and kitchens) of charcoal makers who began using the oak trees of the Tramuntana for this purpose more than a thousand years ago. by @davidhalldorjames
Spain p. II Majorca p. I Acompañarme en la Ruta de Pedra en Sec (GR221). Days 1-4, Port d'Andratx to Soller --- Slides 1-3 are the spectacular southwest portion of the route past Dragonera (day 1). Slide 4 is sunset of that day from the highest point on the route. Slide 5 is two hours later hiking after dark in the brightest moonlight I have ever seen. Slides 7, 8, 9 and 11 pass through olive groves built on the namesake dry stone terraces, dating back up to 800 years. by @davidhalldorjames
New year, old photos from following old friends back across the ocean. Still here, just not there. 10.2025 Barcelona - Sant Pol de Mar - Girona by @davidhalldorjames
