Incredible Big Island πŸŒ‹ . . . 3rd and final stop on the Easter break was Big Island, more commonly known as Hawaii Island. Famous for its diverse climate zones, from snowy Mauna Kea (the highest mountain in the world from base to peak), live volcano and lava flows, to the many sandy beaches. A great place to round off the holiday of a lifetime! πŸ™ŒπŸ½πŸ₯° . . . #bigisland #hawaii #volcano #lava #smoking #flow #mountains #snow #telescope #stargazing #sea #beach #beachvibes #sunset #traveladdict #travelphotography #travelphotography #travellifestyle #hiking #adventure #ironman #illbeback #determination πŸ‘ŠπŸ½ by @davie_leo
"DAVID. YOU. ARE. AN IRONMAN!" I won't forget this experience in a hurry. Crossing the finish line at my first ever Ironman in the beautiful city of Tallinn. As the announcer screamed those famous words, the fireworks roared into life and the crowds went wild for me and every other athlete who crossed the line. A mark of respect and appreciation for those men and women who had just put their bodies through 3.8km of swimming, 180km of cycling, then finishing with running a marathon. On race day, the beautiful sunny weather we'd enjoyed all week was replaced by a significant drop in temperature, driving rain, and 35km/hr winds. There were plenty of crashes out on the bike course, with poor souls being taken off in ambulances due to hyperthermia or exhaustion. As I passed a cyclist stretched out on a roundabout surrounded by medics, I remembered back to what a friend of mine said before the race, "Just keep going. If it was easy, everyone would have an Ironman tattoo!" - @lant.sam This challenge represented a lot to me. I entered the race to get me through the pain and heart ache of not seeing my daughters for over a year due to ongoing covid travel restrictions. I needed a distraction to keep me sane and focused. Despite the huge challenge, injuries, and terrible weather conditions, there was no way I was not making the finish line. I'm no super fit athlete, pretty much your average joe across the board if I'm honest, but a positive mindset and a never give up attitude will get you through. If I had to give advice to anyone doing their first Ironman it would be: do your homework. I read plenty of books and listened to advice from elite athletes and other successful IM friends. This year's UK winner @katr_matthews summed it up perfectly.- "Plan everything". Local tri hero @clairehanntri explained, "don't panic, stick to your race plan". And on race day @beckyhoare01 wise words stuck with me throughout, "eat everything!". Very grateful for the kit sponsor and guidance from @lant.sam and my glamorous support pal for travelling across with me 😊 And finally to the amazing organisers and people of Estonia for putting on a fantastic event, thank you! πŸ™ŒπŸ½πŸ₯°πŸ’ͺ🏽 by @davie_leo
