AGMA member David Mejía reflects on an unexpected path from a middle school scheduling mix-up to a career in opera. In this Hispanic Heritage Month spotlight, David discusses his Mexican-American roots, the music and traditions that shaped him, and his efforts to bring greater visibility to Mexican and Latin American composers and repertoire in opera.

“I'm Hispanic, Mexican, a first-generation college graduate, and the first in my family to be a musician and pursue opera. I'm constantly exposing my family, and people within my culture, to something new. It's a blessing I never take for granted.”

It’s an operetta type of day, I love Camille’s Romance from Franz Lehar’s “The Merry Widow!” 💍🫶

Snapshots in San Diego ☀️

Life is far from easy but I’m thankful for seasons like this in the middle of it all: pockets of love, pause and pure joy!

My time singing at Opera Neo both last year and this year was nothing short of healing, soul-strengthening, adventurous, and filled with a ton of belly-aching laughter. I feel blessed to make art with dear friends and talented colleagues (then hitting the beach and coffee shop after work) 🫢♥️ thank you @opera.neo and SD you are always such a blast! by @davy1030

It was such a pleasure to be a part of Opera Neo’s American Premiere of Louise Bertín’s “FAUSTO.” Here is a brief clip of Valentino’s Aria, “Ah mi batte il cor.” Hoping to share full video soon once I get it, but here is a sample! 😉🎶

Finally found the courage to share this clip from my Principal Artist debut on the MainStage with The Dallas Opera. ❤️

You only ever get ONE debut at a house, and I’m so incredibly happy with how this one turned out.

This was the one and only time I would sing this role — stepping in as a cover and making my MainStage debut with less than 24 hours’ notice for a sold out audience and in front of a composer’s work I’ve admired for years. It was an intense, unforgettable experience, and Rachel Portman’s “The Little Prince,” and the role of “The Lamplighter,” are both things I hold very dear to my heart.

I’m incredibly grateful to the amazing creative team who made it all possible — the stage managers, stage crew, directors, assistants, musicians, and everyone behind the scenes who helped make this happen. I don’t even know all of your names because of how quickly everything came together, but please know how deeply grateful I am.

What a special memory and a debut I’ll never forget. ❤️

Cheers to opening night of G. Rossini’s “Il Turco in Italia 🇮🇹,” it’s been a pleasure to cover the role of Albazar and sing in the ensemble for my second production with @opera.neo! An aria gala, two art song recitals and a cover run later and my time in San Diego is slowly coming to an end. I’m grateful to the incredible cast, crew, and production team behind this amazing company!

The reviews are in! I was so glad to be featured in the San Diego Story covering “Night at The Museum,” for our second performance at the La Jolla Women’s Club with @opera.neo as an Apprentice Artist for my second month here in San Diego, California! Time to close out sold out performances of G. Rossini’s “Il Turco in Italia 🇮🇹 .”

That’s a wrap of Louise Bertin’s “Fausto,” a huge thanks to all of the amazing artists: conductors, pianists, directors, stage managers, singers, costumers, lighting and set design team involved at Opera Neo to make this work HAPPEN! Addio Valentino, hope to see this work to continue to grow after this performance! 🎭❤️🩸
