I had the privilege of having lunch with the real Santabear. The Santabear campaign at Dayton’s Department Store, introduced in 1985, became an extraordinary success, generating more than $300 million in sales during its first nine years. While John Pellegrene was the creative force behind Santabear, his remarkable career at Dayton’s Department Store and later Target Corporation stands on its own as a lasting legacy. For any retail professional, sitting in meetings with John was a rare privilege. He was a true creative genius—kind, fun-loving, and wonderfully humble. Reconnecting with John, his incredible son Joe, and our lovely friend @kristiflanaganvillar (who brought us together after so many years,) was a day I will always treasure. I am the luckiest! 🍀 TY Kristi! What a gift! @daytonsmarkets opens for year 6, November 12! Following suit with Daytons Department Store, the 2026 Santabear launch’s on Black Friday! Cannot wait to welcome you to 700 Nicollet Mall to support over 100 of the very best small businesses in Minnesota, new activations, restaurants and of course, photos with Santabear! by @daytonsmarkets
@daytonsmarkets will be back at the @mnstatefair August 27–September 7 on the Grandstand’s second floor! @mnstatefair Kickoff to Summer exceeded all expectations. Thank you to Pam Simon, Minnesota State Fair retail curator, for inviting Dayton’s back after a 25-year hiatus. Dayton’s shares a 60+-year history with the State Fair, from Grandstand exhibits and department store favorites to fashion shows that were innovative for their time. I am so grateful for the extraordinary response from fairgoers to Dayton’s return at Kickoff to summer. I was even able to hug the Sweetest Martha that we all know, @sweetmarthas and sneak photos with some of my favorites, like Fairbourne and Fairchild, Jerry and Debbie Hammer, and the queen, Pam Simon! Jake, Linda- @shopinthecitymn thank you for being such a creative, and exceptional partner. There’s no one like you! Wait until you see what Dayton’s has instore for you in August! by @daytonsmarkets
A beloved tradition returns. 🎡✨ Dayton’s Department Store @daytonsmarkets and the Minnesota State Fair @mnstatefair share a long, storied history that began in the 1940s and continued until Dayton’s became Marshall Field’s in 2001. Over the years, this partnership brought memorable moments to life—from canning contests (Local jams, pickles,et.) held at the iconic Dayton’s flagship store at 700 Nicollet Mall to glamorous fashion shows, elaborate exhibitions, and exciting new merchandise each year at the Grandstand. Now, for the first time in 25 years, Dayton’s is returning to the Grandstand—where it all started over 85 years ago—for the Minnesota State Fair Kickoff to Summer! Join us this week as we celebrate being back at one of our favorite places: Thursday, May 21 | 4–9 PM Friday, May 22 | 4–9 PM Saturday, May 23 | 11 AM–7 PM Sunday, May 24 | 11 AM–7 PM We’re honored to be back, and we hope you’ll come celebrate with us at the Minnesota State Fair. ❤️ A special thank-you to Pam Simon and the entire @mnstatefair staff, as well as the legendary mother-son team, Jake and Linda of @shopinthecitymn, for your dedication Dayton’s. I truly couldn’t do this without you. @michsmarkets @michberthiaume A very special ❤️ to my friend @amokros Stop by the Grandstands first floor and snatch the cutest “Daytons,” merch along with other nostalgic products created and designed by @shopinthecitymn that will take you back! by @daytonsmarkets
