RECOVERY

Morning begins with a glass of water a long stretch, a small courage rising: the nerve to answer the phone to let someone in, grateful that time has offered itself again. A ritual of small work: the dish rinsed, the call returned. Some days I scrub the same dish to avoid answering the phone. I gather in unity’s circle in a room where hurt crowds every chair....

The Park in the Afternoon
(my poem)
On the parade ground, a woman in silk holds her daughter's reaching hand. The rest of us watch from lawn chairs, a flock, cawing over a boom box. Raven and fledgling. She swoops the small blue-eyed bird up, sets her down, let’s her run, then gathers her back — circling the young straying to the edge of the ring. The girl tests it, darting between swings and slides, looking back to be caught, is caught and darts again....

Ekleipsis
(my poem)

A daughter holds her belly next to the row of lawn chairs.
A black rooftop tarp sticky from yesterday’s heat.
Sounds of midday cars. Air brakes hissing. A bird caws.
The glow of a lemon-shaped lantern.
The mother calls the representative looking for an answer.
Phone slipping through her fingers. Ringing, ringing, beep: “Please hold” Looping music in endless rotation....
