The books I write have wolves with super powers, but the stories always take place in a real-world setting - taiga forests, snowy mountains, red-rock deserts. I'd never been to a jungle before though. What an honor it was to see these animals in their habitat. Here are few snapshots from my trip to Brazil. Not pictured is a two-second ocelot sighting that took my breath away - a surreal moment after seeing them in a video game for a decade.

2) Capybaras sunning themselves on a rock.
3) Daylight jaguar photo credit:
@grizkid (I sadly did not see this one)
4) Shaky nighttime jaguar video (and nervous laugh) courtesy of me. I won't apologize for putting my phone down as soon as I spotted it. I'm a writer, not a photographer.
5) Southern tamandua (anteater)
6) A little Minecraft Story Mode at a roadside lunch spot.
7) Blue-and-yellow macaw. It's wild to see these, as well as Hyacinth macaws and Toco toucans, flying overhead.
8) Brazilian cattle are stunningly beautiful.
9) Black-hooded parakeets at a feeding trough.
