One of the most common claims being made by Alberta separatist groups is that Albertans could leave Canada and still keep their Canadian passports and citizenship.

CBC asked constitutional law experts whether that's actually true.

Their answer: there is no legal guarantee.

Experts say an independent Alberta would not automatically be entitled to Canadian citizenship. Any arrangement involving passports, dual citizenship, border access, pensions, taxes, trade agreements, health transfers, military obligations, and international recognition would have to be negotiated with Canada and the provinces.

Some separatist groups argue Albertans would simply keep their Canadian citizenship while gaining Alberta citizenship. Legal experts say that assumption depends entirely on whether Canada agrees.

The Clarity Act itself explicitly notes that secession could result in the termination of citizenship rights currently enjoyed by Canadians living in a departing province.

And even if existing residents were eventually allowed to keep dual citizenship, experts note there is no guarantee future generations would receive the same status.

This is why CBC matters.

Not because it tells people what to think, but because it fact-checks political claims before they become campaign slogans.

If Alberta separation supporters are promising continued Canadian citizenship, passports, pensions, and benefits, shouldn't voters know which of those promises are guaranteed and which are simply assumptions?
