Shooting matches and spending time with the boys, trying not to take life too seriously, attempting to run a bolt gun like a gas gun.

Talking less and shooting more.

I have found in recent years that I will spend the majority of a course focusing more on telling people what to do and how to do it rather than demonstrating potential solutions to the problem. With the moving parts that go into leading Precision Rifle training, primarily spotting and trying to identify position and gear setup issues, it was easy for this to fall out of priority. Dad-Life has also made it so that shooting matches has fallen to the bottom of the priority list.

A concerted effort has been made to change that this year. I have committed more time to live and dry fire practice than I have in the previous few years combined. I have taken more time to develop load data. I have revamped the way that the courses flow to incorporate more demonstration.I have also had the privilege to put on small-format matches at @theranchtxclub which have been an entirely different challenge all together.

All this to say that being the one behind the gun is more fun, helps you practice what you preach, and is a very beneficial training tool for others as well as yourself.

Precision at distance. 🤘

Another outstanding long-range course at @OxRanch with @DriveTanks. Shooters spent the weekend building solid fundamentals, refining wind calls, and making hits on steel all the way out to 1,800 yards.

Great people, great instruction, and a lot of steel ringing. Thank you to @deadheadprecision for leading the charge with your solid course of instruction and @sir_makes_tanks_go_boom @diamondbackbro @sportsfreak3256 for making it all come together. A phenomenal weekend conducting Precision Rifle training with my good buddy Kelly @k36.consulting at the Ox Ranch. Between a great group of students, high quality equipment, the facilities and teams at Ox Ranch that did so much to support us, and some of the coolest terrain to shoot from in Texas; this was truly a fantastic experience for us as instructors as well as our students.

We were able to get everyone repeatable impacts at just over a mile. We used the unique terrain to get everyone out of the prone to exercise their problem solving muscles. We kept the class-size intentionally small in order to ensure adequate attention to each shooter and meet their specific goals.

Many new species of friend were made, good food and good times were had by all, and we will be back. taken in Ox Ranch by @kalashbashtexas

A match that will steal your lunch and tell you to bring better food tomorrow.

By far some of the toughest terrain somebody would willingly subject themselves to in TX, in a match format that pulls no punches and gives no specifics. The guys @oedefense found every difficult to navigate/climb/descend spot on Venado Ranch and pointed you right towards it. Round count? Course Distance? Equipment list? Give it your best shot.

We did. We failed. We’ll be back. We will try to not DNF every stage.

In all seriousness, this match and others like it are a great test-bed to figure out the needs and wants for any long gun application.

Needs: Less ammo, more water.

Wants: bionic legs, source of potassium if option 1 not available. taken in Bandera, Texas by @kalashbashtexas

Making tweaks to gear ahead of an @oedefense long gun match next month.

Ian @kiltanddagger was cool enough to cut a relief for a machine screw in the arca mount on his tac table. This lets the gun get lower to the center of gravity on the tripod (pictured) and eliminated 3 adjustment/mounting points by removing the ball head altogether.

The name of the game with tac tables is to use a bag in conjunction and this minor solution keeps the whole setup from being top heavy. On a tripod like the @tricergear_ HK which is impossibly lightweight, this mitigates oopsies.

The give-and-take of doing this is that the legs will need to be deployed to the same angle to get full use (relatively flat surface) of the table and high/low elevation shots will require leg adjustments rather than in the ballhead. In these instances I prefer to clip in to a ball head anyway because gravity spares no gun. by @kalashbashtexas

Bob’s Unsolicited Training Tips [B.U.T.T.s] - Tips & Tricks for the common goofball

TRIPOD APPROACH:

Slide 1:
Green: Orientation - 2 legs back allow for recoil to affect the body without trying to kick a leg of the tripod out from under you. In this instance, @kiltanddagger tac table is in line with the muzzle, allowing for most bag contact to the rifle and the ability to traverse targets without sacrificing that contact. I see a lot of guys tables angled 90 degrees to the pictured orientation with wedge bags flipped and cradling the rifle. While that works for some, I find it limits stability of the position and ability to traverse targets without moving the ball head, ultimately defeating the purpose of the tac table. YMMV

Orange: Height - Find low, repeatable positions on the tripod. Pictured is the lowest setting on the @tricergear_ HK, leaving me with the ability to pull the tripod, kick legs out and get on target without letting my brain interfere or forget a step. The downfall to this method is that I do not keep up with my yoga regimen as best I could and that uphill shots will require extra elevation in the legs. I find that downhill shots are far more commonplace than uphill.

Red: Body (Kneeling position) - Low, elbow to knee contact on the dominant side, no double-knee-down or Slav Squatting, 50% reduction in knee pain. Body angles into the gun to absorb recoil. This is a game of anchor points to Mother Earth. If you can’t feel wasichu’s train coming from 50 miles away, get lower.

Slide 2:
Grip: C-clamp grip, steering the gun, keeping it locked into the bag, taking up a minor degree of recoil, reducing muzzle rise when compared to a grip over the top of the objective bell on the optic or tripod legs. by @kalashbashtexas
