Wine Grapes & Corkscrews My framed print sold at Nimbash, Napa’s Annual Arty Party nimbusarts.org, on Saturday. Hundreds of art lovers showed up dressed in sequined dresses & jackets. My print consisted of 300 tiny corkscrew images with a cluster of winegrapes overlayed. Close up image shows the corkscrews in the grapes. #nimbash #nimbusarts #arts #mosaic #mosaicart #napawine #napavalleywine #winegrapes #nimbus #napavalleyart #mosaicartist #photoart #nimbus #photography #artsy #artworkoftheday #deanprintsscenes #napa #nimbusartsorg by @deanprintsscenes

Visited Redwood National Park near Humboldt California and photographed these 2 Roosevelt Elk fighting for rights to share their DNA with the herd.

The gourd has been grown, & dried (for 6 months), the mold & nasty has been scrubbed with SS sponge, the seeds & stuff has been removed, the Blue Bird 1.5 inch hole has been drilled. Now the artistry can begin, wood burning & paint. I’m thinking a Flamingo head with that long neck...whatcha ya think? by @deanprintsscenes

The Mustard Finale photography exhibition celebrating the mustard bloom in Napa Valley is on full display at Jessup Cellars in Yountville California. My photo print took 3rd place and received great attention from guests at the opening reception, and also SOLD…yippee! My print uses 144 mustard vineyard images as an overlay to historic vineyards like Rossi Ranch with a classic water tower. Rossi ranch started in 1907 by the Williams family and kept running by Rachel Rossi after the death of her husband in 1922. Not a simple task considering Prohibition outlawed the sale of alcohol. Rossi never marched to the Cabernet dominated Rutherford area of Napa by growing Charbono, and Riesling…WHAT!!! Rachel’s daughter held the vineyard together until her death and vineyard sale in 2007. Purchased by Frog’s Leap Winery and to their credit didn’t cave to pressure to grow Cabernet Sauvignon, we have enough Cab in Napa. The old school head trained vines with no wires still exist at Rossi Ranch. What a treasure, in America’s greatest winemaking region.

Collage of Mustard flowers images taken in Napa Valley. Mustard flower serves primarily as a ground cover crop springing up between vineyard rows up and down the valley, but this cover crop has an unwitting dual-purpose as it puts on a dazzling display of beauty, capturing the hearts and minds of many a photographer and artist, visitor, and resident. Whether one is a professionally trained photographer or a novice with a smart phone and an Instagram account, the flowering mustard among the vines most certainly creates a picture-perfect memory.

Veraison (veh-ray-zohn), the French viticultural term describing the change of color of grape berries as they begin to ripen. New painting on stretched canvas using acrylic paint created from Napa Valley soil & rock. Most dramatic in red wine grape varietals when they change in color from green to red and finally blue/black, especially in Cabernet Sauvignon the most widely planted grape in Napa Valley. The paint used in this painting was made by sieving, grinding soil-rock & Napa Valley Pigments into very fine particles then mixed with a clear acrylic binder. The source of these earth pigments came from various areas of Napa Valley, California.
Reddish Brown - from rock and clay pigment near Rombauer Vineyards on the Silverado Trail. Exact latitude & longitude location: 38.54807 N, -122.49137 W
Blue - This color was created using the leftover Cabernet Sauvignon skins from the fermentation tank at Sequoia Grove Winery. The skins were dried and ground into pigment then mixed with acrylic binder.
Green – from rock near Lake Berryessa Capell Cove, on the east side of Napa Valley. Exact latitude & longitude location: 38.51222 N, -122.23067 W
Gray/Beige – pigment from rock near the Pope Street bridge near St. Helena, CA. Exact latitude & longitude location 38.51181 N, -122.45580 W
Black – pigment from the burnt trees from the 2017 fire near St. Helena, CA. Exact latitude & longitude location: 38.53223 N, 122.47051 W

A painting that helps explain why Napa Valley is America’s world class wine growing region. The paint used for this painting was created from the soil, rock, burnt bark from Napa Valley fires and red wine grape skins. Wine flavors can change based on what soil elements exist in the vineyard. Grapevine roots can penetrate 5, 10, 15 feet or more into the soil. As roots go deeper, they encounter various layers of soil with different colors, minerals and nutrients resulting in more complex flavors in the wine. Soil is the cornerstone of life on earth, it acts as water filter, nutrient giver, and habit for billions of organisms. I’ve created these color paints from the following sources:
Reddish Brown - from rock and clay pigment near Rombauer Vineyards on the Silverado Trail. Latitude & longitude location: 38.54807 N, -122.49137 W
Green – rock near Lake Berryessa, on the east side of Napa Valley. Latitude & longitude location: 38.51222 N, -122.23067 W
Gray/Beige – pigment from the soft rock near the Pope Street bridge near St. Helena, CA. Latitude & longitude location 38.51181 N, -122.45580 W
Blue - This color was created using the Cabernet Sauvignon skins after fermentation at Sequoia Grove Winery. Skins were dried and ground into paint pigment.
Black – pigment from the burnt trees from the 2017 fire near St. Helena, CA. Exact latitude & longitude location: 38.53223 N, 122.47051 W

This image, “The Hunter” shows the Sandhill Crane hunting for a meal during the day. The ankle-deep water shows a reflection of the lower very long leg. It took second place in the Photography Art Exhibit. Their very long legs make them look awkward but somehow there’s an amazing grace to their walking in the shallow waters of the California Delta Wetlands of Lodi.
At night hundreds of cranes retreat to their roosting shallow water of the delta near Lodi California. The water acts as protection against predators, the water allows the cranes to hear them in advance.
The Lodi Sandhill Crane Festival & Organization promotes the awareness and understanding of the magnificent Sandhill Cranes that have been wintering in the California Delta for thousands of years. If you’ve never attended, please do so, you’ll be amazed by these fascinating birds. So much to see the art, events, educational speakers & wildlife organizations.

Creating from soils/rock in Napa Valley. Creating paint from soil rock pigments involves sieving and grinding with pestle and mortar. The talc fine pigment is then combined with a colorless acrylic binder then grinding on a glass plate using a Glass Mueller. The colors can be amazing. This is old school like early man drawing on cave walls.
