Shoegaze emerged in the UK in the late 1980s, combining distorted guitars, feedback, dreamy vocals and atmospheric soundscapes. Influenced by bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain, Cocteau Twins and Sonic Youth, the genre developed its signature sound in the late 1980s and peaked in the early 1990s with My Bloody Valentine (Loveless, 1991), Slowdive, Ride, Lush, Chapterhouse, Pale Saints, Swervedriver, Curve, Medicine and The Boo Radleys.

By the mid-1990s, shoegaze lost mainstream popularity as Britpop and grunge gained prominence in alternative music. However, its influence survived through dream pop, indie rock and noise pop, inspiring artists to combine melodic songwriting with dense guitar textures.

Today, shoegaze remains influential in alternative music, connecting its noisy, dreamy origins with contemporary indie and underground scenes. by @deizd.wav
