Last week, on August 19th, our sweet Opa passed and went to be with Jesus 🤍🕊️

Opa was the only grandfather I got to meet, and he did the title proud. He was wise, witty, had a strong love of the Lord, loved to play card games, and made the BEST steak (and steak tartar at Christmas time).

Christmas eves with the Scholz side are iconic. We sing Christmas carols (in English and German) and Opa used to whip out the harmonica to be the background music. I remember getting a harmonica when I was younger and realizing it’s MUCH harder to play than Opa makes it look.

I loved hearing his stories and seeing how well he loved Oma. Together they demonstrated what it means to be a loving partner with faith at the centre of it all.

Opa loved soccer (⚽️ 🇩🇪) and I’ll always remember watching the FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in Germany and in Vancouver with him, along with many Germany men’s team games on TV! I need to go to a @whitecapsfc game to cheer on Thomas Müller in honour of him!

Opa had a deep appreciation for good food and good sauce due to being a high end professional chef for many years (in Germany, California, and Canada) and I’m very lucky to have enjoyed his food for many years!

While we miss him dearly, he was at peace knowing he was going to be with Jesus, and that’s one of the greatest gifts of this faith ❤️

I love you always Opa, thank you for being an incredible role model 🤍 by @delalstad

Greece trip with the siblings!! 🇬🇷🫒🍹🌊

We had the BEST time exploring Athens, Milos, and Santorini with Malia and Jordie!

Top tips? Go to the bucket list places, but spend the majority of your time on the beach islands! We had so much fun ATVing across Milos and visiting different beaches!

“Don’t let anyone ever dull your sparkle” ✨

Grammie was the most fabulous human I have ever known. She always had something sparkly on her, had more clothes than anyone else I knew - and wore all of them, was a total sun babe and could tan for hours, always loved a photo opportunity, LOVED a reason to get dressed up, always had a box of chocolates on her counter, more times than not had glass of Pinot Grigio in hand, never failed to have a pack of mentos, ADORED nachos with the fake cheese sauce, was a big fan of ice cream, would never say no to a hot dog, was the best host, and was always generous.

Anyone who was lucky enough to meet her knew how special she was. She was an absolute spitfire! Some of the things she has said are extremely iconic, but not appropriate for social media 😅 With all of her vices, she still was an incredible role model for all of her grandchildren, teaching us deep generosity, the importance of not judging, and the joy that comes from celebrating all the little (and big) things.

Grammie was a big Christmas and Easter gal! She embodied the role of Santa for so many people in her life, more than we probably even know! Her sexy Santa costume, light up earrings, and bunny ears are iconic. Her go-to appetizer to bring was devilled eggs, which we were reminded of when we found 5 devilled egg trays in her condo (I now own 1 and will be keeping the tradition alive!). Grammie knew how to make life feel magical.

She loved raising a glass for whatever reason. Going through her old photos, she had a lot more house parties in her later years than we realized!!

Her go to cheers was “salud, amor, y pesos, y el tiempo para gastarlos” - “health, love, and money, and the time to spend it.”

While we wish we had more time with her, I think she lived out that cheers very well.

Grammie went to be with Jesus on June 9th after peacefully passing in her sleep, and while this week has been hard knowing we won’t have her sparkly personality anymore, many friends have told me she is probably glitzed out of her mind up in heaven, and I think they are so right!

See you again one day, Grammie, for now, I’ll keep sparkling for you 💖 xoxo Kailani by @delalstad
