ARC Review 🖤
The Video Store Massacre by @mikegrimala
Release date May 15th, 2026.

Video Store Massacre was my first ARC read via @netgalley, and it absolutely did not disappoint. From the very first pages, the book delivers on its promise of twists, gore, and pure horror entertainment. What really elevates it, though, is how much of a love letter it feels like to classic horror culture. Fans of old-school horror films and vintage magazines will find so much to enjoy in the clever callbacks sprinkled throughout.

The tone strikes a perfect balance, blending sharp, gruesome moments with just the right amount of humor. It captures that nostalgic vibe of horror from a different era, where scares and laughs often went hand in hand. This balance makes the story feel both fresh and comfortingly familiar.

What surprised me most was how invested I became in the characters. The relationships between the main cast are thoughtfully layered, adding real depth to the story. I found myself just as engaged in their everyday lives, whether they were hanging out at the drive in, roaming around town, or causing chaos for the video store clerk, as I was in the central horror plot. Honestly, I could have happily read a standalone novel focused solely on their antics and friendships.

Overall, Video Store Massacre is a fun, gory, and heartfelt read that horror fans will truly appreciate. I am already looking forward to seeing what this author does next.

Unbox some comics with me 🤍

The Last Man (1826) by Mary Shelley — a dystopian, post-apocalyptic vision of the late 21st century where a relentless global plague wipes out humanity. Perfect timing after finishing Pentiment and watching The Decameron… clearly I’m in my plague era. This one’s the official April pick for @tonyshorrorcorner 🖤

Dead Teenagers @onipress throws it straight into horror-thriller territory. The plot five friends stuck in a time loop since 1997, reliving prom night and dying over and over again. Total Groundhog Day & Happy Death Day vibes, which is completely my thing. Both copies are issue #1, just different covers. I couldn't pick loved them both.
By Doyle - Yarsky

Then there’s Midnight Man @keenspot (2026) a one-shot diving into his origin within the Mark Spears Monsters Universe. I love this art style.
By Spears, Mark - Melissa - Lucas - Chase & Myers

Super Creepshow @imagecomics the anthology series I’ve been waiting for, can’t wait to see what twisted tales come out of this new launch.
Creeping by Gillen - Gifford - Brosseau
Speed freak by North - Charm - Brosseau

And last but not least, issue #2 of The Thing on the Doorstep (image comics), based on the H.P. Lovecraft story. I was hooked after issue one, so I’m all in to see where it goes next. The art style makes it feel extra gritty. 🖤🤍 by Birks - Roberts - Jones

First book of 2026 - Graveyard Shift - M.L Rio
2/5 🌟
📗
Have you read this book, what did you think?
📗
Quite disappointed. This story feels underdeveloped. The ideas that initially spark curiosity are abandoned for an "occam's razor" plot. For a novella, the time spent over explaing easlily grasped plot points would have been better invested in character building. Ultimately, the apsect has been heavily explored across media over the past decade, which made the reading experience feel uninspired and repetitive.
