In the Negev Desert, in Israel, Bedouin communities live—Arab peoples traditionally nomadic or semi-nomadic who have developed ways of life adapted to extremely arid conditions.

Goat and sheep herding organizes daily life according to climate, access to water, and natural cycles. Although many groups are now partially settled, they maintain cultural practices passed down through generations.

In this context, some women wear distinctive clothing: long black robes, face-covering veils, and conical straw hats. This attire is not decorative; it protects from intense sun, reduces exposure to wind and sand, and helps regulate body temperature.

At the same time, aromas and perfumery are part of an integrated system in everyday life. The use of incense such as bakhoor or resinous woods like oud, burned in braziers, permeates clothing, skin, and spaces.

This serves hygienic functions in environments with limited water, acts as an insect repellent, and creates a socially valued atmosphere, especially in the context of hospitality.

Concentrated alcohol-free oils, known as attar, are also used for their long-lasting effect and resistance to heat, along with local desert herbs that are dried or burned for their aromatic and mildly antiseptic properties.

Artisanal practices are also integrated, such as soaps or ointments made from milk or animal fat. In this way, scent is not a luxury but a functional, social, and cultural tool deeply tied to their identity and adaptation to the environment.

In Japan, Sōtō Zen is one of the main schools of Buddhism, founded in the 13th century by Dōgen. Its practice centers on seated meditation, or Zazen, particularly in the form known as Shikantaza, which emphasizes direct awareness without goals or added techniques.

Within this austere framework, the use of aromas occupies a discreet yet structured role. Incense is the primary olfactory element and is integrated into practice as a ritual tool. Its use follows codified gestures—preparing the incense burner, placing it with precision, bowing—that reinforce bodily discipline and continuity of attention.

Rather than serving as a sensory enhancement, incense functions as a temporal marker: its combustion defines the duration of meditation sessions and helps structure the daily schedule. At the same time, it establishes a symbolic frame, marking the beginning of practice and formalizing the space.

Materials such as sandalwood and agarwood produce soft, stable fragrances. However, these are neither emphasized nor interpreted. In line with Sōtō Zen principles, scent is not treated as an object of contemplation; it is perceived incidentally and allowed to pass, like any other phenomenon.

In monasteries of the Orthodox tradition, such as those of Mount Athos, monks of the Great Schema live under a regime of withdrawal, continuous prayer, and visible symbols in their attire—the analav and the kukol—which condense their spiritual commitment.

Within this context, the use of scent is structural. Incense—primarily frankincense—is burned recurrently during services, marking moments and movements within the rite. This is complemented by consecrated oils, such as myron, applied in key ceremonies.

The result is an environment where scent is not decorative: it settles into fabrics, wood, and air, creating a persistent atmosphere. Rather than perfuming, scent functions as a ritual element that orders the experience and reinforces the sacred dimension of the space.

In Vejer de la Frontera, women covered by the cobijado—a black mantle that leaves only one eye visible—create a particular relationship with perfume: the scent stays close to the body.

It settles into the fabric and the skin, becoming intimate. Orange blossom, jasmine, and herbs remain as part of the everyday. A discreet perfumery, tied to gesture and environment. by @demolishedstudio
