THE LINE 014: DENZIL. 🥁

Every performance begins long before the first note is played.

For Denzil Johnson, that preparation is just as important as the performance itself. A drummer, percussionist, and musician from South Trinidad, Denzil began as a self-taught musician before training under the late Leonardo Morales and continuing his studies at UWI.

Throughout his career, he’s performed alongside a wide range of musicians, explored rhythms from different traditions, and shared that knowledge with others as both a performer & tutor.

Ask Denzil what people misunderstand about percussion, and he doesn’t start with technique. He talks about preparation. The size of the venue. Whether it’s indoors or outdoors. The audience. The style of music. Every detail shapes what he brings, how he approaches the performance, and ultimately, what the audience experiences.

For Denzil, all of that preparation serves one purpose.

💬 “Getting that seamless blend of satisfaction and the release as a result of creation or expression. This may not always happen, but it’s a goal.”

It’s a perspective that reminds us creative work doesn’t begin when people are watching. It begins much earlier; in the research, preparation, and thoughtful decisions that most audiences never see.

That invisible work is just as much a part of the craft as the performance itself.
