What a journey it’s been! Three weeks before this triathlon last year, I ruptured my right quadriceps tendon and suffered a severe left knee injury (see previous post). This was my 6th triathlon and first open water race! Lots to improve, but I finished 10 minutes faster than my goal time, and swam the 1/2 mile course without stopping. Those were my goals! Thanks Aly and Katie for cheering me on, and for the videos 😃

Slide 2- trying to run in the sand to transition to the bike

Slide 4- keep a consistent speed

Exactly one year ago today, July 13, 2025, on this exact court , I ruptured my right quadriceps tendon, and severely injured my left knee while playing tennis. Playing again tonight on the same court on which I was injured was a small victory in this long recovery journey. A quadriceps tendon rupture is a catastrophic injury that requires 18-24 months for full healing. Unfortunately, some people never fully recover. I will be 12 months post surgery on 23 July 2026. The slides in this post show some of the milestones during this process. Still a ways to go, but thankful and grateful for how far I’ve come.
1. Playing tennis tonight, 13 July 2026
2. Immediately after my right quadriceps tendon ruptured. Caught some air after hitting the ground, and leg looks a little crooked 😬
3. I was unable to walk or even stand up
4. I circled the structures which were torn. All 4 quadriceps muscles coalesce into the quadriceps tendon, which attaches to the knee cap to extend the leg
5. Post surgery brace worn for 9 weeks, 6 of those weeks were 24/7, even while “sleeping”
6. Post op week 9- started swimming. Walked up and down the stairs for the first time, and wore pants again
7. Indoor rock climbed at week 10
8. Reached the top of Mt Pisgah at week 10 as well
9. Post op week 15- first kayak paddle. Nice and splashy!
10. First time jogging was at 20 weeks. Jogged for 4 minutes
11. Climbed outdoors at 6 months
12. Snowboarded at 7 months. I was really glad about that
13. Ran the Eugene 5k at 9 months post op. Beat my goal time!
14. Post op 10 months- climbed 3,100 feet up Mount Hood
15. First SCUBA dive was a couple weeks ago at 11 months

This was my third time scaling Mount Saint Helens, but first ascending the winter route (Worms Flow route). I found it more challenging than the summer route. Had good weather overall, but the wind gusts were ridiculously strong, prompting multiple climbers to turn around. The summit still has large dangerous cornices, which prevented me from taking photos of the crater. Still, a great climb! The trek was 10.5 miles with 5,603 feet of elevation gain.
Slide 1- video from the summit showing parts of the western rim, Mount Rainier, Mount Adams, and parts of the eastern rim
Slide 2- Summit time!
Slide 3- Making my way up with Mount Adams in the distance

Slide 5- One of the best ways to descend is glissading! Glissaded 3,500 feet in total! The joy :-)

The Newport Harbor Triathlon- my first race in 5 years. Pleased to have earned 2nd place in my age group, and swam a personal best time! The location was beautiful, and included biking along Yaquina Bay, and running across the full length of the Yaquina Bay Bridge twice. 🏊🏾‍♂️ 🚴🏿 🏃🏾‍♂️

Late season climb to Camp Muir (10,100 feet) on Mount Rainier (Tahoma). Great training for other treks, and a good challenge in its own right. Elevation gain was 4,760’ over 9.5 miles.
Slide 1- the Muir snowfield/glacier and Mt Rainier through my eyes. Zoom in to my glasses!
Slide 2- Tahoma in its glory
Slide 3- in the middle of the snowfield contemplating, “why do I do this?”
Slide 4- looking up and up and up at the seemingly endless snowfield between us and Camp Muir
Slide 5- several of the huge crevasses on the adjacent Nisqually glacier
Slide 6- view from 10,100 feet. Mt Adams and Mount St Helens seen in the distance
Slide 7- rest stop along a boulder field. Type 2 fun
Slide 8- Bambi and her fawns. Not a care in the world!

“Mountains are not fair or unfair, they are dangerous”
Solo ascent up the 10,047 foot Middle Sister volcano. Depending on time of year, this is two different mountains. Currently, it’s still winter on the volcano, with a technical crux. This trek was 14 miles round trip with 5,066 feet of elevation gain.
Slide 1- From the summit of Middle Sister, North Sister volcano looming large behind me
Slide 2- Beautiful view of North Sister, Mount Jefferson, Mount Hood, and Mount Adams
Slide 3- Obligatory selfie lol
Slide 4- My view of Middle Sister from the base of Hayden glacier, which requires crossing to access the mountain
Slide 5- 360° panoramic video from the summit; it’s hard as heck holding my phone steady for 1 minute 😂
Slide 6- Looking south at South Sister volcano and Mount Bachelor, with tools of the trade in the foreground
Slide 7- In the beginning, there was a trailhead

2nd annual Pan African Snow Day! When I recreate in the mountains, I rarely see another Black face, so I was overjoyed to spend an entire day at Mount Hood Meadows with these beautiful people. We snowboarded, skied, ate delicious Caribbean food, made new friends, and had a joyous time together. One day is not long enough! Shout out to @loweso_ for organizing ✊🏾🏂

Slide 2- me, Sharday, and William before the group ride. William’s father was the second Black person to earn a law degree in the state of Nebraska.

PADI open water diver (SCUBA) certified! This was a long time coming. I’ve wanted to become SCUBA certified since 2012, but didn’t have the water survival skills to do so until recently. I started the course on 9 January 2024, and I am proud to say I was certified in the chilly waters (49°) of the Pacific Northwest 🤿 🤙🏾

Perfect day for class 2/3 paddling on the McKenzie in Oregon. Getting more comfortable with the nuances of my Outfitter; it’s a great kayak. Definitely looking forward to fall and winter whitewater 🌊

“Somewhere between the bottom of the climb and the summit is the answer to the mystery why we climb”. Attempted a car to car climb of 14,179 foot Mount Shasta. Didn’t reach the summit due to time constraints, but climbed above 13,000 feet and over 7,000 feet of elevation gain for the first time. I reached an elevation of 13,158’. Total climb was about 10.8 miles. Mt Shasta is the second tallest peak in the cascade mountain range, and the most voluminous mountain in the lower 48 states!
Slide 1- view from 13,158’
Slide 2- the unmistakeable UFO/mushroom rock at 12,800’
Slide 3- starting the long journey in the middle of the night
Slide 4- sunrise at 10,000’
Slide 5- drinking snow melt creek water through my Life Straw around 8,400’
Slide 6- Mount Shasta from a gas station miles and miles away

Good times mountaineering with good people! Mount Washington stands at 7,800 feet, and we traveled 11.4 miles RT. Elevation gain was 3,284 feet. I chose this climb because of the alpine rock climbing section, which is about 200 vertical feet from the summit, and included rappelling, which is always fun! Unfortunately, there was a lot of smoke from local fires, which made for poor views from the summit.
