#BioIntegratedDesign is interdisciplinary by nature, and the process rarely stays within one discipline.

From lab work and material research to welding, woodworking, digital fabrication, and assembly, building at a 1:1 scale means moving between methods, tools, and ways of thinking.

Leafing Space Demonstrator is a 1.5m x 1.5m prototype of the assembly we imagine for #Folymer application on site.

🍂Leafing Space is a #Folymer project. But what is Folymer?

Born from #leaflitter , Folymer explores the potential of turning what our cities discard into something that can sustain life.

What if the future of polymer is already falling from the trees?

Leafing Space is a @bio_id project. See the full digital portfolio of the project in the Bartlett Autumn Show link in bio.

🍂 Leafing Space explores how a leaf-litter-based biocomposite can reintroduce processes of decay and growth where impermeable ground can no longer support them.

🦠 Leafing Space

As cities become denser and permeable ground is replaced by hard infrastructure, we noticed a shift in how organic waste is processed.

Leaf litter, a carbon and nutrient source for decomposers and soil ecosystems, is often removed rather than broken down by microbial communities. This led us to ask: Can a leaf-litter-based biocomposite foster decomposer growth and enhance biodiversity in dense cities without expanding green spaces?

🍂🤎🧪

We investigated cellulolytic decomposers already present in urban soils and developed Folymer, a leaf-litter-based material designed to retain moisture and support microbial activity.

We then asked the material what it wanted to be.

Material experiments explored its fabrication and biological and mechanical limits, while environmental data and computational modelling informed patterns, layering and areas of growth and decay.

With digitally informed decisions and our experiences in building, a 1:1 prototype was developed.

One of the most rewarding things has been seeing how fallen leaves can open conversations about energy exchange, therapeutic crafting rituals and architectural typologies.

These conversations have been like nutrients for me, changing how I see infrastructure: not ‘human-first’, but as a vessel for biological processes and behaviours.
