Last night was special, one of those moments you don’t take lightly.

Grateful to be in a room filled with so much brilliance, purpose, and lived experience. Spaces like this remind me why the work matters and who it’s really for.

Huge thank you to Dr. Natasha Pratt-Harris for curating such a powerful and meaningful event. Your leadership created something that people will carry with them long after the night ended.

Humbled. Grateful. Blessed. by @devinwalkersr

I’m grateful I had the opportunity to join the No Boundaries Coalition of Central West Baltimore for a conversation about how we can help Baltimore’s students and families start the school year strong.

As a Community School Coordinator at Sandtown-Winchester Achievement Academy, I see how much students benefit when schools, families, and community partners work together. It takes all of us—sharing resources, staying connected, and showing up for our young people.

Thank you to the No Boundaries Coalition for bringing the community together. Let’s keep building.

What if the system doesn’t just punish people but keeps restocking itself?

RESTOCKED: The Business of Broken Justice examines the cycle of incarceration, reentry, surveillance, and profit—and the people and communities living with its consequences.

This is bigger than one person, one case, or one moment. It’s a conversation about the systems we’ve built, who they serve, and what it will take to change them.

Watch the trailer. Share it. Join the conversation.

Today reminded me that the best way to prepare educators for a new school year is to introduce them to the community they’ll be serving.

Today at Sandtown-Winchester Achievement Academy, we welcomed our new teachers with more than an orientation—we welcomed them into the heart of Sandtown-Winchester.

Before stepping into classrooms, we stepped into the neighborhood.

Together with Tracey and the Sandtown Community Collective, we took a community walk that highlighted the history, strengths, resilience, and pride that make this community so special. I encouraged our teachers to see Sandtown through an asset-based lens—not defined by headlines or statistics, but by the people, families, churches, businesses, and leaders who continue to invest in its future.

I shared a message that I deeply believe:

Communities don’t need saviors. They need partners.

When educators take the time to understand where their students come from, they build stronger relationships, create a greater sense of belonging, and lay the foundation for student success.

We wrapped up the day with great food, meaningful conversation, and the announcement of the winning classroom for the New Song Community Church Classroom Adoption Program. It was another reminder of what’s possible when schools, families, faith communities, and neighborhood organizations work together.

I’m grateful to everyone who helped make today possible. This is what community engagement looks like—and this is how we build schools where every student knows they belong.

Community isn’t built by talking at people, it’s built by walking with them.

Today I had the opportunity to speak with members of our community about service, leadership, and responsibility. I shared a simple truth:

You can’t serve people you don’t respect.

Real service begins with seeing the dignity, value, and potential in every person. I see you because I am a reflection of you. We come from the same neighborhoods. We carry many of the same stories. We understand the same struggles, but we also share the same capacity for greatness.

That’s why I’ve always believed in one principle:

Lift while you climb.

As we grow, we have a responsibility to reach back, open doors, share knowledge, and create opportunities for those coming behind us. Success means more when it becomes a bridge for someone else.

Thank you to everyone who welcomed me today. The conversations reminded me that our communities already possess the talent, resilience, and brilliance needed to transform themselves. Sometimes people simply need someone to see it, speak life into it, and walk alongside them.

Story. Society. Impact.
Let’s keep lifting as we climb. by @devinwalkersr

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to speak with students at Coppin Academy High School about one of the most important battles they’ll ever face, the battle over their identity.

Every day, they’re exposed to headlines that tell them who they are supposed to be. “Teen takeovers.” “City in crisis.” Stories that too often reduce young people to statistics, stereotypes, and fear. Those narratives don’t just shape public opinion, they can influence policies and decisions that affect the opportunities available to our youth.

I wanted these students to hear a different message.

You do not have to accept the story someone else writes about you.

Your neighborhood does not define your potential. A headline does not define your character. The loudest voices in the media do not have the final word over your future.

I challenged them to become the authors of their own lives, to write a new chapter every single day through their choices, their discipline, their leadership, and their courage. Tell your own story. Build your own legacy. Walk in your greatness unapologetically.

When young people learn to control their own narratives, they begin to change not only how the world sees them, but how they see themselves.

That’s where real transformation begins.

Every time I revisit The Souls of Black Folk, I’m reminded why W.E.B. Du Bois remains one of my favorite sociologists. More than a century later, his analysis of race, education, identity, and structural inequality still challenges us to think deeper about the society we’ve built and the one we’re called to create.

Today’s listen: “Of the Training of Black Men.” It’s not just history; it’s a conversation that continues to shape my work as a sociologist, documentary filmmaker, and community advocate.

Du Bois taught us that understanding society requires more than observation, it requires courage, scholarship, and a commitment to justice.

“The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line.” While the century has changed, many of the questions he raised remain with us.

Still learning. Still listening. Still committed to using research, storytelling, and community engagement to help create a more just society.
