Ep. 3: Lower Body Strength

A few of the lower-body moves I’ve been teaching in my classes lately! These exercises focus on building strength, balance, and control through the hips and legs.

Swipe through for a closer look at each movement and the muscles we’re working.

Tricep Push-Up to Ball Row + Side-Kneeling Leg Series

A little upper body, a little lower body, a LOT going on. The side-kneeling leg lifts, sweeps, and circles fire up the glutes and outer hips, while the push-ups and ball rows add an upper-body challenge. Your core is working overtime to keep everything stable.

Side-Lying Inner-Thigh Series

Top knee on the ball, bottom leg doing all the work. Lifts, circles, and a little point-and-flex action target the inner thighs while challenging control through the hip and ankle.

Kneeling Lunge + Ball Roll

A little lunge, a little hinge, and a whole lot of control. Rolling the ball down the inside of your calf adds a balance challenge while your glutes and quads work to keep you steady.

90/90 Lunge + Ball Hold

Looks simple enough, right? Don’t let the ball fool you. Holding this position challenges the quads and glutes while building strength and stability through both legs.

90/90 Lunge + Overhead Ball Hold

Same lunge, new level of commitment. Holding the ball overhead adds a balance challenge while your quads and glutes work to keep you steady in that 90/90 position.

90/90 Lunge + Forward Hinge

Front knee stays bent, back leg straightens, and glutes working overtime. A little hinge goes a long way in challenging the posterior chain and building strength through the hips.

Hinge Hold + Ball Circle

The assignment: hold the hinge and pass the ball from overhead to behind your back. Your glutes and hamstrings work to maintain the hinge while your legs fight to keep you steady.

Bear Plank + Ball Squeeze

Hover the knees, squeeze the ball, breathe like a normal person. That’s all. The ball squeeze recruits the inner thighs while the quads work to maintain the hovering position. Your core helps keep everything stable.

Ep. 2: The anatomy of your upper body

Shoulders, back, biceps & triceps.

Know the muscles. Understand the movement. Make every rep count!

Cat/Cow

Muscles at work - Your abs & back muscles work together to move your spine. Think of it as a little reset after being hunched over your laptop.

Child’s Pose ➡️ Tricep Push-Up

Muscles at work - Your triceps help straighten your elbows, while your chest & shoulders help with the push. Aka the muscles you need because you can’t stay in child’s pose forever.

Lateral Raises

Muscles at work - These target your side shoulder muscles, helping build strength for scooping up your fur baby.

Front Raises

Muscles at work - Your front should muscles help lift your arms forward, like when you’re reaching for the last bag of groceries in the trunk because you’re definitely making it all in one trip.

Bicep Curls

Muscles at work - Your biceps help bend your elbows, whether you’re curling a weight or bringing your iced coffee in for another sip.

Serve the Platter

Muscles at work - Your shoulders help move your arms forward, building strength for passing your fave snack.

Around the World

Muscles at work - Your shoulder muscles help control your arms in different directions. Helpful when wrestling with that fitted sheet.

Overhead Tricep Extension + Hip Hinge

Muscles at work - Your triceps help straighten your arms, while your glutes & hamstrings power the hip hinge. Because apparently picking up one thing off the floor always turns into picking up five. by @devoetedtofitness

Ep. 1: The anatomy of your warm-up & core

Ever wonder what your body is actually doing during your Pilates workout?

This series is all about breaking down the movements we practice, the muscles involved, and the purpose behind each exercise.

Because understanding your movement can change the way you move!!

Diaphragmatic Breathing

What’s happening? - Your ribcage and belly expand as you inhale and softens as you exhale.

Muscles at work - Your diaphragm helps you breathe, while your abs help control the exhale.

Posterior Lateral Breathing

What’s happening? - Breathe into the sides and back of your rib cage, allowing your ribs to expand outward without your belly rising.

Muscles at work - Your diaphragm drives your inhale, while your intercostals (muscles between your ribs) help expand your rib cage. Your transverse abdominis (natural corset) helps maintain core support.

Knee Sways

What’s happening? - Gently move your knees from side to side while keeping your shoulders grounded. Your pelvis rotates as your core controls the movement.

Muscles at work - Your internal & external obliques (side abs) help control rotation, while your transverse abdominis (natural corset) helps stabilize your core.

Pelvic Tilts

What’s happening? - Gently rock your pelvis forward to create a small gap of space between your low back and the mat. Then flatten your lower back toward the mat, tilting your pelvis up.

Muscles at work - Your rectus abdominis (6-pack muscles) and obliques help control the movement of your pelvis, while your deep core muscles support stability.

Articulating Bridges

What’s happening? - Lift your hips off the mat by peeling your spine up one vertebra at a time, then slowly lower back down with control.

Muscles at work - Your glute max (largest glute muscle) and hamstrings help your lift your hips, while your abdominal muscles support your pelvis and help control your spine as you move.

Half Roll-Down

What’s happening? - Sit tall, then slowly roll your spine backward into a C-curve, lowering only as far as you can while maintaining control. Use your core to return to starting position.
