I’d say our “decorations” are more on the subtle side!😆

No storage space needed, our spooky decor is totally natural. 🕷️ 🕸️ 🪱 🦉

Do you have any spooky, natural, decorations around your home?!

YES!! We have a @the.box.of.life Worm Studio back in one of my favourite shops in Kelowna, @chickpeacezerowaste!!

Stop in at Chickpeace to check out the worms and see what they’re up to (spoiler alert: they are probably eating!)

If you’re in soon, you have a chance to pick up a rare ‘book worm bookmark craft in a bag’ to take home, as a little gift from me. If you know me, I’m rather low tech (and this craft kind of shows it 😆), but I think it’s a fun way to brush up on some worm facts. The components are all in the bag and each bookmark is unique as there are multiple facts listed for each of the numbers components. See the fourth slide for a run down of how to make it (and yup, that took me way too long to make and the shots still got cut off 🙃)🎨.

Thank you @chickpeacezerowaste for helping us show off what a great option vermicomposting is for indoor composting. 💚

Let me know below if you plan to stop in and see what the worms are all about ⬇️

When I see how quickly food scraps break down in a healthy compost pile or bin I can’t help but get fired up 🔥.

I desperately want a lot more food scraps kept out of land’fulls’ and instead turned into soil building compost, that can then be used locally to grow more potatoes, apples, kale and more. 🌱

Food security is being talked about a lot, and for darn good reason, and I also want to hear more about composting. I’m not great (yet) at getting my voice heard, so I’m asking…. How can I do this? 📣

Do you have any suggestions? Or know someone who does? 🥰
Please tag them below ⬇️

908 kg/ 2002 lbs

That’s the amount of food scraps that I have collected, as of today’s additions to the compost pile!

Thanksgiving was just a couple of days ago here in Canada and as I chopped up the scraps I imagined the delicious Thanksgiving dinners that were enjoyed. I saw lots of Brussel sprout and potato peelings, squash, carrots, green beans, cauliflower and more. Unfortunately I didn’t think to grab the apple peels and cores for for my photo op, until they were already in the compost pile! I imagine they must have been the scraps from a homemade apple pie (right?), and they would have made a perfect “kg”. Oh well!😂

To some this number won’t seem like much, but I’m pretty darn proud. I’m doing this myself with a limited budget and limited space, and it’s working!

I am looking for others in Kelowna that are interested in seeing my compost set up and are interested in occasionally lending a hand (or more than occasionally if they’d like!). If this is you, I’d love to connect!

Thank you to the beautiful Melissa of @digging_into_soil for these amazing gifts by @digging_into_soil

Thanks to the organizers of @okcoffeefest for thinking through allllll the details for the second annual coffee festival this weekend in Kelowna! 👏

The phenomenal coffee poured this weekend can be enjoyed knowing that the spent coffee grounds will be composted responsibly afterwards. 🪱

Landfill < 🌱 composting!

Coffee grounds are one of the EASIEST items to compost! So if you’re kind of curious about putting your coffee grounds to good use at home or work by composting them, I’d love to help!

I think there may still be a limited number of tickets available for tastings on Saturday and Sunday so check out @okcoffeefest to get the details!

Lots of hard work by organizers, roasters, artisans, bakers, and more has gone into this so that we, the coffee lovers of the Okanagan, can experience it ALL!! ☕️ #okanagancoffeefestival #compostinginkelowna #kelownacoffee #laurelpackinghouse #urbancomposting by @digging_into_soil

Could we be anymore wholesome?

I’ll share my watermelon with worms any day. They get the rind, I get the rest and we are all thrilled.😂

Update time!

475 kg / 1047 lb of food scraps!! That’s a lot! 😮

In a little over 2 months I have collected 475 kg of food scraps from a growing number of neighbourhood contributors and 1 business (that’s you @buffalo.rouge.brewing 🥰!).

That means a whole lot of food scraps have been diverted from @cityofkelowna landfill, and are currently being transformed into rich, dark, beautiful compost. These scraps aren’t “waste”, they are being used as a “resource” and that feels really good. 🌱

Are you wondering how? Well I use the same continuous hot composting method as my friends @yimbycompost!! I collect scraps once a week from neighbours, weigh the buckets of scraps and mix those scraps with carbon rich materials such as leaves, wood chips and straw. Other than monitoring the heat and moisture of the pile, my job is done and the microbes get to work. 🦠

Honestly, it’s a commitment and takes time and effort on my part, but I am so happy to be doing this. If I can do it, I believe this can be replicated in neighbourhoods all over town. That’s my dream!

If anyone is reading this in Kelowna and is interested in having a close up look at the composting in action, please reach out. I promise I don’t bite and would love to show you around and answer any questions! This is what this is all about - creating community, sharing knowledge and building skills. I’m here for it allllll!

My family is fine, our house and our immediate neighbours are fine, but our neighbouring communities are not.

I’ve been quiet here, because honestly it’s a lot and I don’t really know what to say.

Some may be reading this from the other side of the World and aren’t aware of the current Wild Fire situation in B.C. and others are feeling it themselves in their own backyard.

Multiple fires have wreaked havoc in communities all over B.C., taking lives, homes, and peace from so many. The devastation is absolutely horrific.

I don’t know how to finish up this post… but I guess this photo is a good representation of how I feel at the moment. So, if you feel like “this”, you are not alone.

A few nights ago I hosted a neighbourhood gathering and it was soooo lovely!🥹

I was having so much fun that I took 0 photos - instead I connected with neighbours and shared information about our community composting project as we hung around our two compost piles.

Here are some photos and video clips that I took afterwards, to share a little bit of the evening. It ALMOST makes up for no photos at the event, right?!🙃

If I’m ever low on motivation for my community composting project, do you know what I’m going to do? Yep, look at the wagon! I’ll look at the wagon, look at the drawings and remember this evening. I’ll remember the conversation, enthusiasm and passion that I had for working hard to make a difference. I’ll remember the surprise and disbelief from attendees as the amount of food scraps in pile #1 was discussed. I’ll remember the way multiple food scrap contributors offered a solution to a challenge that may present later this year (in winter). All of it and more, I’ll remember the feeling of this night.

Thank you so much to @unitedwaybc.si for help with funding and to @yimbycompost for the support, guidance and inspiration. And to all my friends and neighbours, online and in person, thank you for all that you are doing to help me push this project along. #locallove #unitedwaybc_southerninterior #communitycomposting #compostinginkelowna by @digging_into_soil

Here’s a little peek at a few of the creative projects spilling out all around my house, as I prep for the neighbourhood gathering happening THIS week (on Tuesday July 28).

I want to make this REALLY good with my goal being that everyone has fun, learns a little something and leaves feeling inspired - not necessarily about anything composting related, but inspired to try something in life that they’ve been thinking about.

I talk about @yimbycompost a lot, and I can’t wait to find out what neighbours think, and hear what kind of questions and ideas they bring forward. And if neighbours just want to come by for a sweet treat, that is perfectly fine too!!

The support of @unitedwaybc.si and their #locallove fund is what is backing this project and gathering and I hope I can make them proud!

If you’d like to browse through some of the information I have gathered, add some artistic touches to our compost wagon, find out the latest stats of our composting stats from here in Old Glenmore #kelowna, please DM me so I can pass along my address. I would love to welcome you on Tuesday evening!
