Through Director John Buchanan’s friendship with art historian Richard R. Brettell, the Dixon was introduced to Montgomery H. W. Ritchie, the owner of the vast JA Ranch near Amarillo, Texas. In addition to being a celebrated rancher, Mr. Ritchie was, like Hugo Dixon, British by birth and an enthusiastic collector of French Impressionist paintings.

Buchanan invited Mr. Ritchie to visit the Dixon, and he was charmed by the Dixon’s intimate scale, the hospitality of our community, and the important place his collection would hold at a museum still relatively young in its development.

In 1995, John Buchanan facilitated a partial gift, partial purchase from Montgomery H. W. Ritchie in Amarillo, Texas. Mr. Ritchie and the Dixons had very similar taste and often bought from the same art dealer, which made this acquisition a perfect addition to the collection.

“80 Exhibitions, 18 Years” | On view through January 3

For many artists, the Dixon’s Mallory and Wurtzburger series offered their first major museum exhibition and a springboard for what came next. From new partnerships to exhibitions and commissions beyond the Mid-South, the series has helped Memphis artists grow their careers.

“While this series has been a wonderful experience for local artists, it is deeply meaningful for the Dixon, too, giving us a strong presence in Memphis’ contemporary art community,” said Ellen Daugherty, Associate Curator. “Our goal is to instill a sense of pride in the incredibly talented individuals working in the Mid-South and to introduce our guests to their new favorite local artist.”

Discover the Dixon’s collection like never before.

For the first time, the majority of the Dixon’s collection is on view throughout the museum in the order the works were acquired, offering a new perspective on how the collection has grown over five decades.

Following Margaret and Hugo Dixon’s original bequest, the collection continued to take shape under the leadership of the Dixon’s first director, Michael Milkovich. From Renoir and Pissarro to Morisot and Daumier, each acquisition tells a story about the museum’s evolving collection and the people who helped build it.
