You can make anything a sketchbook … when Justice+Civic Design Mallory Cusenbery, AIA, found himself without his sketch pad, but in need of one, he picked up a book.

“I see better with a pencil or stylus in hand. The act of drawing slows me down and focuses my brain … [it helps me] look beyond the stereotypes of place.” Doing so makes room for emotional memory, and trusting unexpected tools to lead somewhere new.

This and, “dream big.”

Design Days: our annual celebration of shared passion for what we do. Anchored by a global design activity, this year we focused our efforts on a singular real-world opportunity – the Rondo neighborhood revitalization in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

“@reconnect_rondo is a Saint Paul-based nonprofit dedicated to rebuilding the historic Rondo neighborhood divided by I-94 in the 1960s. Their mission is to reunite the community, restore a vibrant African American cultural enterprise district, and reduce pollution.”

Across our studios, we imagined the possibilities for this neighborhood and hosted the organization responsible for the development in our Minneapolis studio. It’s a treasured time for our firm where we get to pause, reflect, and think big about the challenges and opportunities of design in our communities.

There’s something beautiful in preserving history. by @dlr_group

A ~site~ to see as students walk into the new @westmec Southeast campus this semester. Marking our fourth campus as their design partners, this one is strategically located along the Loop 101 corridor – an area seeing major infrastructure and commercial development investments.

This CTE facility is different by design: here, students can receive career and technical education ranging “from advanced semiconductor manufacturing training to pioneering artificial intelligence initiatives,” noted West-MEC Superintendent Dr. Scott Spurgeon.

Affectionally referred to as a “giant billboard” that highlights student accomplishments, our design is all about seeing potential. All the way down to our interior design, where students can window shop future careers.

This story is one of innovation, initiative, and bold moves. Read on in our link in bio.

Not long ago, this building sat as a vacant call center along the I-35 corridor in Olathe, Kansas.

Cue the opportunity for adaptive reuse: Olathe Public Schools brought career and technical education programs from across the district under one roof. Now an Innovation Campus, it’s designed to utilize a once forgotten building to bridge the contrast between education and career.

Culinary students run a coffee shop and restaurant that serves the community, construction students help maintain district facilities, and partners like @Google, @USAA, @Garmin and @AdventHealth mentor students as they figure out what comes next.

Reusing the existing structure saved 33% of cost savings over new construction, reduced embodied carbon, and left flexible space that can change as workforce needs do.

Part harbor, part library, all mass timber – Industrious Marina del Rey gives members a workspace shaped by the coast just outside. 🌊

Industrious traded square footage for this building’s character, so our design builds on its exposed timber and courtyard connections with a nautical concept that nods to the harbor without going literal.

Knotted rope frames the reception desk and holds up a countertop that appears to float, while sailcloth curtains, rib-like walls, and a palette of bleached oak and cobalt blue carry the idea through the space. Members can trade the social energy near the café for a quiet interior built for focus, or settle into private offices sized for anyone from a solo founder to a twelve-person team.

Which corner would you work from first? Tell us in the comments.

Michigan’s tallest mass timber residential building is rising on the same corner where a family-run bookstore served Michigan State students for 66 years.

The Howard is named for Howard Ballein, who opened the Student Book Store there in 1960, and its exposed wood runs all the way down to Grand River Avenue so you can see and touch it from the sidewalk. If you live here, campus is right across the street, a CATA bus line runs out front, and shops fill the ground floor.

Michigan only recently adopted the codes that allow mass timber at this height, so The Howard will be the state’s first mass timber residential building of its scale, and MSU students in the mass timber program will follow along through site tours, progress meetings, and guest lectures as it rises toward a 2028 opening.

If there weren’t students in this photo, we think it’s safe to say this could have been a workplace, a hotel lobby, or a retail passageway. But nope, this is the new Tomahawk Elementary School.

Reading nooks tucked into wood-lined walls, a butterfly mural stretching down the hall, and a canopy of leaves overhead turn this corridor into a treehouse students get to explore every single day. 🌳

The building itself curves around its playgrounds and outdoor learning spaces, following the golden ratio.

Collaboration zones weave through every learning pod, giving students room to read, build, and tinker beyond the classroom, while each classroom shares space for messy maker projects along with a small group room for intervention and teamwork. Tomahawk welcomes 600 Shawnee Mission School District learners into 78,000 SF of new K-6 learning environments.
