5 things I did during my high-risk twin pregnancy. 🤍

As a chiropractor, I already had a strong interest in evidence-informed care, exercise, and supporting women through pregnancy. But experiencing a high-risk twin pregnancy myself made it personal in a whole new way.

Here are 5 things I prioritized:

1. Built a team to support me:
I regularly worked with a high-risk OB, a midwife, a chiropractor, naturopath, pelvic floor physio and a doula. I honestly can’t imagine my experience without each one of these healthcare professionals.

2. Exercised regularly:
Exercise reduces the risk of maternal complications. When exercise is safe during pregnancy, it can help reduce the risk of preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, depressive symptoms, cesarean birth and even urinary incontinence. Well it doesn’t guarantee avoiding these things, being pregnant with multiples the risk factors go up tremendously so I wanted to do everything in my control to prevent complications. Shoutout @lostcycle where I was able to spin right up until I delivered.

3. I stayed on top of the research:
One of my twins was growth restricted and because he was in line to come out first, there was a chance my daughter was going to get stuck coming out. I dove into the literature and had honest and educated conversations with my OB about my options. I was able to feel confident in the decisions I was making.

4: I supported my nutrition with food and supplements:
I definitely ate for 3. I ate a lot of calories and focused on nutrients that would help both me and my babies. I got regular bloodwork that I went over with @dr.trinakennedy.nd and supplemented what I was lacking.

5. Stayed on top of my monitoring:
I was very busy with appointments near the end of my pregnancy. Bloodwork, ultrasounds, appointments with my OB. The close monitoring I received allowed me to have an amazing birth experience and allowed me and both my babies to be healthy.

These were the ways that I chose to be proactive during my pregnancy when so much was out of my control.

You can’t always prevent every complication and not everything will go to plan but being educated and informed can reduce your risks. by @doc.poeta

A little update from me 🤍

After a very special season at home with Ofelia and Franco, I’m slowly making my way back to the clinic.

For now, I’ll be returning with reduced hours as I transition back into work and life with two little ones. I’ll gradually be adding more hours as we find our rhythm and figure out what works best for our family.

I’m so excited to be back doing what I love while also giving myself the space to enjoy this season of motherhood. 🤍

If my hours don’t line up with what you need, Dr. Tyler is continuing to see patients and would be happy to look after you while I’m easing back in.

Thank you for all the support, patience and understanding during this transition. I’m so grateful to be coming back to a practice and community I love. by @doc.poeta

September is NICU Awareness Month

As a twin mom, I knew my babies had a higher chance of needing NICU care. About 43% of babies born as multiples are admitted to a NICU, compared with about 9% of singleton babies.

But knowing that statistic doesn’t prepare you for what it actually feels like.

Nothing prepares you for birthing two babies and holding them both, only to be told that your time is up and one baby is being taken to the NICU while you get to keep holding the other.

Nothing prepares you for learning how to breastfeed one baby while simultaneously hand-expressing colostrum, while your husband runs down the hallway with syringes so your son can get those first precious drops as quickly as possible.

After labouring through the entire night, missing a full night of sleep, and delivering my babies at 7am, I spent the day going back and forth through the halls, making sure my daughter and I were getting our checks in postpartum, while spending every other moment carrying her down to the NICU so she could be with her brother.

And then, at midnight, after being awake for what felt like forever, I was walking down that hallway again because I felt guilty my son was alone.

I had to ask if I could take him out of his NICU bassinet to change his diaper, and then carefully navigate all of the wires and cords just to hold him.

There is such a strange heartbreak in leaving the hospital with one baby in your arms and knowing your other baby is staying behind.

But as difficult as that was, I am incredibly grateful for the NICU and that our stay was short.

I’m grateful for the attention my son received.

I’m grateful that they cared for my daughter as though she was their patient too.

I’m grateful for the nurses who helped me create a plan to breastfeed both of my babies and make sure they were both getting what they needed to grow.

I’m grateful for the nurses who cuddled my son during the night when he was lonely.

I’m grateful for every update about the minutes I was missing.

And most of all, I’m grateful that I brought home two healthy babies.

NICU nurses and staff are just incredible people! by @doc.poeta

Postpartum Rehab is back starting September 15th!

This time I will have two very little assistants joining me. My little twins, Ofelia and Franco, will be on hand to demonstrate the most important part of postpartum rehab: how to be a baby 😂

I can’t wait to be back helping moms reconnect with their bodies and heal from their birth experiences.

A little life update… 🤍

My biggest promotion yet has officially arrived… I’m now a twin mom! 👶👶

As our family settles into this exciting new chapter, I’ll be stepping away from treating patients for the next little while to soak up these precious first months.

Thank you to everyone for your support, patience, and kindness throughout my pregnancy and this transition. It truly means so much.

While I’ll be away from the treatment room, Mobilita is very much business as usual. Dr. tyler Nancekivell will be looking after my patients, and I have complete confidence you’ll be in great hands. I’ll also continue to be involved behind the scenes, so if you need to reach me, please contact the clinic and I’ll get back to you as soon as I’m able.

I’ll be sure to share updates on my return to practice once we’ve figured out what this next season looks like.
Thank you all again for your continued support. I can’t wait to introduce you to our newest little additions and see you back in the clinic when the time comes. 🤍 by @doc.poeta

🩷Maternity Leave Announcement💙

I’ve been a little quiet on here lately…

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of celebrating so many of your growing families, but I’ve also sat alongside many of you through fertility struggles and loss. Because of that, sharing this news has felt a little different and I want to be mindful that announcements like this can bring up a lot of emotions which is why I have waited so long to make this post.

That being said, if you’ve seen me in the clinic recently, you’ve probably noticed my bump 🤍 I’m so grateful & excited to share that I’m expecting twins, due in July.

I’m planning to work as long as I can, so I don’t have a set date for when I’ll be starting my maternity leave. As many of you know, twins often have their own timeline, so things may shift quickly as I head further into my third trimester.

Please don’t stress about your care! You can continue booking as usual. If I go into labour or reach a point where I can no longer physically work, Dr. Tyler Nancekivell will be stepping in. We’ll do our best to avoid cancellations and keep your care consistent.

@dr.tylerchiro has actually been treating me throughout my pregnancy, and I have full confidence in the quality of care he provides. If my schedule becomes more limited or you’re having difficulty booking with me, I strongly encourage you to see him. You’ll be in great hands!

While I’m off with the twins, he will be covering the clinic, and we’ll work closely together to make sure this transition is as smooth as possible for everyone.

I’m hoping to return part time after a few months, depending on how recovery goes for both me and the babies.

Thank you all so much for your understanding, support and kindness 🩷💙 by @doc.poeta
