Today's post is a commission that took me six years to finish. This is Rafaela, the lead heroine in the YA series 'The Exile' written by my good pal Mr. Jeremiah Murphy. I did dozens of sketches and made numerous attempts to finish this to my satisfaction over that six years. But a mix of personal upheaval and anxiety kept me literally going back to the drawing board over and over again. It's taken a long time for me to internalize the ideas that perfectionism isn't always healthy and done is better than perfect. All that aside, the completed piece seen in the first slide is the second version I did over two weeks. The piece in the fourth slide was the prior attempt, which I wasn't happy with. It felt too flat and lifeless. The second piece has a lot more sass and movement. What do y'all think?

In the last few years I've become obsessed with crayons. Finding them, collecting them and drawing with them. Just Crayolas, mind you. The more obscure the color, the better. I started by filling entire pages with cross hatch marks of various colors, then I moved on to the swirling patterns seen in the 7th, 8th and 9th frames. Then I eventually moved on to actual drawings. Why? Because in my anxiety-ridden mind, crayons are not "real" "serious" art supplies. They're for playing with, so the stakes are so much lower. There's nothing to fail at. I'd eventually like to get to the point where my mental health issues will allow me to move onto "more serious" mediums. It would also mean that I can think of myself as being "good enough" to make art (yes, I'm aware that I possess a higher-than-average artistic talent, but my anxiety and depression like to convince me otherwise) despite the fact that I can in no way monetize my talent.
The last frame is an undated pencil drawing I came across while taking these photos.

I had to explain Doop to my boyfriend. And if one is going to explain Doop, one then must draw Doop.
