The Don is starting to move.

Every tropical summer, the Don River reshapes itself.

Rising in the Clarke Range around 60km southwest of Bowen, the river has plenty of local folklore surrounding the speed of its flow. But one thing is certain - with a short journey from the range to the sea, when the rain comes, the Don can move fast.

After a dry spell, rain in the Clarke Range can see the river ‘come down’ in a small wave — a sight that’s often talked about around Bowen.

And this year, it’s started early.

This photo, taken at the track's 5km mark heading upstream, shows the first run of water making its way towards the sea for the 2026/27 wet season.

The Don is changing again. 🌊

What makes the Custom Lithium Don River Dash different?

Ask Levi Stephens...

After winning the 2026 Bike King of the River title, Levi shared with the ADB Magazine podcast crew why the Don stands out from other races — and why it feels a little more like a holiday.

Sand in his bits, a face full of water and a smile that wouldn’t leave his face!

Grant Denyer swapped the TV studio for the driver’s seat at the 2026 Custom Lithium Don River Dash and discovered that off road racing is a little different to anything he’d tackled before.

He called The Don “epic” and a “mega event” — and even jumped into the commentary booth the next morning to relive his adventure.

So, what did Grant really think of his first taste of The Don? Read the story on our website - https://donriverdash.com.au/grant-denyer-does-the-don/

Every year, the team at @bowentourism provides the Custom Lithium Don River Dash with behind the scenes support that is very much appreciated.

From helping us with media releases and suggesting ways to get the word out, to promoting the event to the many visitors who stop at the iconic Big Mango along the highway, their support makes a real difference.

We’re grateful to the Bowen Tourism & Business team for getting behind the Don River Dash and helping visitors discover what’s happening in Bowen each September.

Thank you for everything thing you do for us, Bowen Tourism and Business. by @donriverdash

Here at the Don River Dash, we’re so grateful for the support of Tourism and Events Queensland.

TEQ supported us in 2025 and again in 2026, helping us spread the word far and wide about the Custom Lithium Don River Dash and put Bowen and the Whitsundays on the map as a destination for off road racing.

Their support also helped us create a more welcoming event experience. If you were at the Showgrounds this year, you may have noticed some of the quieter touches - the things that don’t necessarily shout for attention, but make a real difference to how an event feels.

We’re proud of how the Don continues to grow, and we’re very grateful to have Tourism and Events Queensland behind us as we work to make the event bigger, better and even more welcoming each year.

Thank you, TEQ, for helping us share the Don River Dash story.

Behind the Don:

Every year, Whitsunday Regional Council quietly supports many, many events across our region, and the Custom Lithium Don River Dash is fortunate to be one of them.

We simply couldn’t do what we do without their support.

From logistical planning and permits, through to helping us actually deliver the event, Council’s support is a crucial part of making the Don happen.

And this year, they went a step further, supporting some special entertainment for our youngest visitors - a free electric dirt bike Come & Try experience running across all three days of the event.

It was hugely popular with the kids, with plenty of budding riders getting their first taste of two wheels. We may even have had a future Don River Dash competitor take their very first ride with us!

A big thank you to Whitsunday Regional Council for the support you provide to the Don, and to events right across our region. We really do appreciate it. by @donriverdash

Volunteers of the Don, we salute you!

Here’s just a few of the many volunteers who helped us bring the 2026 Custom Lithium Don River Dash to life.

From admin and set up, to line up marshals, sweeps, recoveries and the pack down crew - we’re grateful for every single one of you. The Don simply wouldn’t happen without you.

Thank you for giving your time, your energy and, in many cases, a very early start (and a very long day!) to help make the event what it is.

We’re already looking forward to seeing you all again - hopefully at the Don in 2027!

Thank you, Volunteers of the Don. by @donriverdash
