A love letter to old forgotten places…♥️

So much of Singapore has changed in just a few generations. There are places I will never walk as they once were and stories I will never hear from the people who lived them.

I feel a strange tenderness sometimes for the Singapore that existed long before me, but beneath the relentless march of progress and change I think there is a thread connecting us to all the people and stories that came before.

We cannot bring back every lost village, but we can keep telling their stories so these places are not lost to us twice. They deserve to be part of our Singaporean story. 🇸🇬♥️

Come watch Amber Tides, happening 31 Oct - 1 Nov. All proceeds go to supporting Metta Welfare Association and the incredible work they do with underprivileged communities in Singapore. Tickets start from $28. SG Culture Pass eligible. Link in bio.

AMBER TIDES is now officially closed! 🥹🇸🇬❤️‍🩹✨

Thank you all for letting me share a piece of my heart with you onstage (and in my reel, that has since gone viral?!). I love my country but I wonder sometimes if we’ve moved ahead too quickly past the places and people that have helped build Singapore over the last few generations.

Kampung Amber is one of those long forgotten places.

Once a bustling coastal village in Katong, it was demolished in the 1970s and 80s to make way for urban residential developments. One of the only remaining landmarks from that time still standing today is the Chinese Swimming Club located on 21 Amber Road, first founded in 1905. The village now largely exists only in archival photos and narratives passed down from former Kampung residents.

Set in 1947, the story of “Amber Tides” centers on Kampung Amber, tracing the struggles of two young siblings, Aysha and Syukor, trying to make a living in the village against the backdrop of Singapore’s rapid post-war maritime transformation.

I am so glad playwright Danial Matin decided to restore Kampung Amber into our collective consciousness through this musical, and I am so honored to play a small part in bringing this place back to life. Perhaps now one less village will stand forgotten in our Singapore story. 🇸🇬♥️🌊

Thank you for joining us at SECONDARY: THE MUSICAL!

It’s been a privilege to bring this powerful work back to the stage after its premiere in 2024. Two years later, we are deeply moved to know that this Singapore story continues to impact the lives of many across different generations, and proud to have received the immense support from our audiences throughout the entire run. It is extremely important to us that we keep telling stories that open conversations on how we can understand, love, and encourage those around us to keep moving forward.

Hearing each one of your personal reflections and stories after each show has been incredibly fulfilling. Please continue to leave us feedback at tinyurl.com/talktocheckpoint 🧡

Thank you again for spending your time in the theatre with us at SECONDARY: THE MUSICAL, and believing in the original Singapore stories we tell! by @donthavelah

Thank you, thank you, thank you… these past 3 weeks being in National Day Charade have felt absolutely unreal and performing to full house audiences in our closing week of shows was just the cherry on top.

A core memory for me is when my character (based on political exile Dr Ang Swee Chai) sings the NDP song “Home” after recounting to the audience how she has not been able to return home to Singapore for more than 30 years. The only time she could return was to carry home the ashes of her late husband. The lyrics of “Home” takes on painful new meaning — I had a hard time trying not to cry thinking of her story and the profound sense of loneliness it brought when telling it. I’m glad her story found its place in this show and that it’s been able to reach so many people in the process. Recently I also found a poem that has since captured this feeling quite well:

“You will learn me all over again. Words you’ve known since childhood, tongues of your adult life, all will take on new meaning. Not once, but once again.

You will learn me in the beginning with hesitant heart. Pedestrian words will seem pregnant with meaning. Hello and please become declarations of affection and a simple thank you becomes an affirmation of forever. Anything more complex, elevates. […]

You will learn. And then you will be silent.”
(from “Objects of Affection”, by Krishna Udayasankar)

The show has closed but perhaps songs like “Home” will now take and bring on new meaning, and perhaps we are all the better for it. ♥️🇸🇬🎇

also — that last pic really should’ve been the actual poster for our show, but for some reason @wildricesg went ahead with the safer option instead… good call.

Being in National Day Charade has been pretty wild and nothing short of a dream. Some of you may know this as my @wildricesg debut, but way back in 2017 as a broke drama school student, I actually had my first ever gig with Wild Rice, volunteering as an usher for their panto Mama White Snake just so I could get free tickets to watch the show. Never in my wildest dreams could I have seen what was coming for me many years later. The biggest thank you @thmsltw @ivanhengwild @wildricesg for giving me the incredible opportunity to be here, on the very same stage where all the actors I looked up to have stood. If I have seen further it is only by standing on the shoulders of giants; the view is dizzying and at the same time so humbling. As we journey into the final week of shows, I am reminded again how incredibly lucky I am to be here and how rare all of this is.

Hearing the laughter, the crying, and holding this space together with audiences for all the complicated, beautiful, funny, messy ways we show love for Singapore. Being together in this space and exchanging stories of joy, grief, frustration. Being painfully honest about what it feels like to love a country that sometimes doesn’t love you the way you hope she would. There are no words to describe how grateful and moved I feel bearing witness to all of this.

Hope to see you at the theatre in these last few days my friends - National Day Charade is such a special show and I am so proud and honoured to be telling this beautiful story for a few more days in the Funan theatre. ♥️♥️♥️ by @donthavelah

pov: you get to perform a bucket list musical as your debut in a mainstage production ✨🥹

there are simply no words to describe the literal JOY being in this musical brought me. friends who know me well know that I’m always surrounded by music - I don’t think I’ve ever been in public and not had my earphones in, it’s always been a part of me. many years ago as a bullied teen in secondary school, music was the one thing that pulled me through. so when the opportunity came to perform in one of the most iconic musicals to come out of Broadway, obviously I had to say yes.

a few years ago, in school, when everything closed down because of covid, I remember feeling so lost one night wondering what my career was going to look like after graduating. and sure enough, I did all sorts of odd jobs. I worked in the social service sector, I got certified as a UX designer, I even worked in an engineering company with the US navy (ngl this was pretty fun). I read stories and sang to babies for a while too. I did kind of love that last job, but nothing ever came quite as close to theatre when it boiled down to what brought me the most soulful, spiritual, primal kind of joy. thank you friends - old and new - who came to watch me humbly do my thing. your love is overwhelming and deeply felt from the stage every time I took my bows at curtain call.

p.s. to the audience member who said my little solo gave them goosebumps during the finale, just know that I cried many happy tears that night on the train ride home ♥️ by @donthavelah
